Just a random topic I decided to make, probably a bit interesting as well for a few people as it is a topic not everyone knows much about.

Today I will go into a wee bit of information about HIV. Human Immuno Defeciency Virus (pardon muh spellin btw, this laptop screen SUCKS BALLS!). Also called many other things.... D;

Essentially this virus is obtained through the sharing of bodily fluids, such as mucous, semen, urine, blood, and I've even heard of tears ;

The virus itself is pretty damned boring looking from a microbiological perspective. I can't find any images right now :<

It is "rumored"/"Proven" that this virus emerged from Africa from a xenotropic transmission from a primate mammal to a human (many viruses are xenotropic... such as H1N1, MCD to name two very common names we've all probably heard about!).

How has it spread? Most likely it is because of the high sexual activity of our species that constantly urges us to satisfy its demands. Couple this with transportation of people through sea, and air... and then you have the framework and backbone for an infection that is seemingly easy-to-avoid to come across the border.

Shocking and appauling ways to obtain the disease:
-Blood transfusions.
-Organ transplants.
-Dirty needles/etc.
-From birth.

What can this disease do?:
Obviously we all know "OMG IT SHUTS DOWN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM!", sadly, that is not the only thing it does!

Now since I am a neuro-freak I will focus on what the disorder does in terms of neurological basis. This is effects on the brain and the nervous system. Sadly, the effects can be widespread in both the PNS and CNS.

One explination for how it gets into the nervous system is that the HIV virus clings onto larger immune cells such as phagocytes or macrophages and is able to pass through the highly constricted and mediated blood-brain-barrier to the CNS... and for the PNS it travels through the blood-nerve-barrier. These barriers normally won't even allow the passage of most things, good and bad... that is why we can't merely inject dopamine into patients and instead need to use l-dopa which is a precursor that can pass through the BBB.

Now the importaint fact is that each neurological infection has a certain affinity for a particular type of nervous tissue, in specifics it has its own favourite food... sort of like a person may prefer "chocolate cake" over "buttered popcorn". I'd love to go into detail here but I may driv people up the wall when I start spewing out things like astrocytes, etc. ;p But you'll get the jist of it...

Dementia:HIV-Associated dementia is not something too unheard of. When people think of dementia they often think of things such as "picks disease" "multi-infarct dementia" or "punch-drunk syndrome".

However, a fair portion of patients with this infection may obtain dementia in the mean-time.

What does this mean? cognitive impairment galore... and essentially that the CNS has been penetrated by the infection. This includes the brain to the spinal cord.

Distal Polyneuropathy:

This is generally associated with the PNS (peripheral nervous system), its essentially a burning or extreme tingling sensation and is associated with "maladaptive" pain. It is uhm... generally undesireable and thats about all I can really say about this.

So with AIDS we have diffuse CNS and PNS damage. A neurological infection, indeed.

Now because I want to be a dick, I will go into Herpes Zimplex Viruz

Esentially we all know stuff about this, however, it is also not unheard of for a person to suffer from "Herpes Simplex Encephalitis" in which the infection goes to the CNS brain tissue and begins nomming on it. Some pictures are... very graphic (but realistic).

Luckily! This has a generally effective treatment! CYCLO... **** I forgot the name ._. uhm... too lazy to hit delete.... acyclovir XD! Omg my memory >.>;

Tl;dr: Have safe sex D; And health sites cover maybe the bare surface of a disorder... esp when I can rattle this off in 5 minutes without even thinking, rofl.

Not really worth typing all that for STI since they will learn it at 8th or Freshman year of High School.
