It definitely is inevitable and there is no purpose of fearing it but I wonder, what is it like to die ? The idea of simply disappearing, not existing anymore doesn't seem comfortable at all. All the stuff you have done, memories, everything suddenly gone... I was here, gained experiences and all that stuff and it suddenly disappears and I don't even know as I disappear as well (not physically of course, there will be my corpse for a few years afterwards).

I don't see too much success in this but I'll make this a side topic of this: What do you believe in after you die ? Do you believe in soul living on - in Heaven, in Hell, returning as a different being (reincarnation) or in nothingness ?

Or you know what, let's make this slightly larger topic as the title is quite general. Another question: If you could choose your death, what would it be and what would be the worst death you can imagine ? For me the best would be dying because of age, this "falling asleep and never waking up again" thing. The worst death I can imagine would definitely be suffocating.

Probably, in my opinion, the next-best-thing to compare it to would be to cases of amnesia... such as Mr. Clide Wearing who had a SEVERE infection that lesioned out both hippocampus and actually did dio diffuse damage to his left frontal lobe as well.

He describes it as being death, a void in which there is no tomorrow or past, in which EVERY time he "wakes up" he has "really" woken up for the "very first time"

as described by his self markings in his diary....

A very religious topic. I like to think that the conscious - or soul that some of us like to think control our bodies lives on. Whether it takes another form, or moves into another place of existence. I like to think that our soul moves on, and learns from each life, without passing it until it's reached enough information to transcend into something beyond just a soul. I'd like to call it a Seer. o_O
    /writes books.

I think the best death is at the end of your age, in your sleep, as you say. I think the worst death would be to die in a sandstorm.

I just had a thought about making a thread related to death like 20 minutes ago (different subject, but similar), but I'll save it for later ;P

The worst death I can imagine is being in a tight spot I can't get out of which would probably cause me to panic (claustrophobia) followed by asphyxia over a long period of time.

Best death would be the one without suffering, pain and anguish of yourself and those around you... a peaceful death in which no one needs to shed tears.

Worst would be quite the opposite =/

Oh yeah, I forgot to say what my "best death" would be. Probably a death where you can rest comfortably knowing that you haven't left anyone behind to drown in their sorrow, that you've accomplished what you wanted to and that your death will not stress anyone, a death in which you know you're loved, but its you're time and there's nothing wrong with it, its "just a part of life, because there cannot be life without death".

edit: Me and aegis think alike on best xD

Put a kisk somewhere to respawn again...

Seriously, is that important to think whats going on after you die? You ll be death why would you care? I think what matters is what we do here and now.

Sir After you die lights go off and you sleep for eternity, period. There is no heaven nor hell, your mind before you die gets stuck in some sort of limbo and that limbo is a heaven you created yourself. Heaven is nothing more than having peace before the time of your death.

Without death, all we have are just experiences. Accumulation. You can't call that life. - C.C.

Death certainly is inevitable as you say, the the experiences you have in life are really all that you have. The only thing of you that lives on after your death, other than kids, are memories. Think of Hitler for instance, such a terrible person but he'll certainly always be remembered. Not for something good, but just that generally it's the criminals that are remembered, not the ones who got them. Do you know who got Charles Manson off the top of your head? Probably not, kind of sad when you think about it.

As to death itself, I think of it in the same way as this, do you remember anything before you were born at all? Of course not, because you only start to take in things as your mind develops. So, the birth of the mind, comes from there being no life in the mind yet, and the same when the mind dies with the body, and I find that beautiful and scary at the same time. The greatest thing about it? When your dead, you wont care, all the greatest burdens of life will be lifted, and you'll truly be 'free'.

I don't believe in souls, heaven, hell nor the purgatory catholics just abolished. Which leads me to say, if religions can freely change things like that, how can you trust them anyways? What if tomorrow they just decide all women are actually demon spawn and should be treated as such? Sounds highly unrealistic and improbable, but the idea that they can do those things seems realistic to me. Religious proof comes from the bible, but have you ever read a book and learned a lesson from it? Or something that made you think about yourself, or others around you, and maybe even sparked a change? Maybe to some that's Harry Potter, but I didn't go thinking I could cast spells afterwards.

If I could choose how I died, other than the most pleasant in your sleep, I'd say a type of lethal injection, which just feels like your falling asleep, or to die in any form instantly, no pain. The most painful way, would be drowning, because your lungs release an acid into themselves to dissolve water when it gets into them, and since you're underwater your lungs would just get full, so not only are you suffocating your lungs are burning themselves with acid, most painful.. and burning to death really wouldn't be so bad, the fire would burn up most of the nerves in your skin before you die, so you wouldn't feel the burning pain anymore, just that you're on fire, and dying.

I'd have to agree with Adieu. I don't believe there's anything religious about a person dying at all. It's just a person dying. Nothing more. Religion was created to fill the void made by man's fear of the inevitable. Dying. Man hated that idea. So he made up constructs like the soul, the heaven and the afterlife. A fantasy that he can cover death with as a facade, a fantasy he so badly wanted to believe in that he compromised his own life just for the sole purpose of getting to heaven. A fantasy.

I don't believe in the afterlife, the soul, or heaven. Only when you stop fearing death do you actually get to live in the moment and make the best out of your life. I believe in living out your life to the fullest that you can until the day you die.

The worst death scenario for me would be suffocating. I'd rather die by a bullet to the head or of old age in my sleep.

Forgive me but those are my own words. Derived from my own ponderings about religion. It's funny how you jumped to that conclusion right away. I consider myself polite enough to credit someone if ever I'm referencing their works. Can you give me some reference to Hawking's works? I'm quite interested now that you mention it.
