This is a very good laptop. I use it myself and it plays the latest games at full settings great. It also has a full keyboard and numpad. Something that most laptops lack. Take this to all the lan parties and you'll be the top guy(or gal) there guaranteed.

    ^ pwnage.

    On a serious note though.

    Something with...

    cpu: i7 2630QM
ram: 4gb (8gb, just buy another 4gb stick and chuck it in, easy as pie)
gpu: This is where it really counts and where the big bucks are needed.

Good for the price - GT 460M (560M is pretty much the same, a little bit better, but meh, It'd be cheaper to opt for the 460)
Best - GT 580M (massive premium here, makes the price skyrocket)
    (I'm an nvidia fan)

This'll be a good starting point, here's a laptop from Australia (should be able to find roughly the same from other countries) for around your price.
    Metabox P151HM1 - Clevo P151HM1 - 15.6 inch Gaming laptop notebook with GTX 460M 1.5GB graphics

Edit: This is a full HD laptop (1920x1080) extremely hard to beat for the price + performance.
Unless you're fine with 1366x768? Then a whole new ballpark opens up :)

Just as a tip: Most laptops come with an INTEL video board (Actually, a chipset), which sucks a lot. I've had it, with 1,25GB of RAM in it, and it sucked game-wise (Couldn't run games from 2005).

    I have a desktop with a 1366x768. ( Acer x193HD )
and i think i have a good quality of video :3 ( course also has to do with the graphics card, but I have another monitor that is square, and the definition doesn't compare! )

Go for Alienware M17 with no customization its exactly 1500, its a pretty good laptop when it comes to gaming. Next to the new m18x by alienware.

Man, ya'll getting swayed by the flashy lights and shit from AW.

If you have the money to burn, sure, go for gold. But, for the price, there are plenty of other laptops out there that are better for the same price. You just lose the name and possibly the bright lights :/

Moral of the rant: Alienware is overpriced and not worth it.
