I'm doing a 3-page research on this topic, and it seems interesting so far.

What's your take on this matter? Should prisoners be given a chance to be exposed to education and (hopefully) return to being productive members of society, or should they be cut completely from the aid to prevent them from abusing it (apparently there's a Pell Grant for prisoners who engage in prison schools, which might (not) be a bad deal)?

Depends on what they did to get in there to start with.

I partly agree to this statement.
It all depends on how much the prisoner wishes to return to being a normal member, right?

grants for convicts? no thank you! if they have some way to work extra hours via prison work programs to pay for it themselves, sure...we're paying for them to be in there anyway, might as well do something productive with the time.

They only get the grant if they enroll in prison schools.
Once they decide to not attend, the grant will be cut.

I agree with what Chris said. Depends on what they're in there for.

    Everyone deserves a second chance.

@topic: I think everyone deserves a second chance. Most of the cases are out of rage and they simply get caught on the first time.

im sorry but when productive, law-abiding citizens are denied financial aid for making $10 too much income, why on earth would you support supplying financial aid to these people?

So you're saying they shouldn't be learning and becoming normal people again.
Instead, let them become worse as the hateful beasts they already are, so we can shoot them down later without any excuse?

I believe it depends on what they are learning completely.

It is a bit dangerous, likewise, to teach someone dangerous advanced psychology and practical uses of it.

Probably not the wisest thing to teach chemistry to a drug-crafter.

    Etc...

But, aside from that, who am I to judge?

In reality it would be benificial towards them because getting a job with a crimical record (ESPECIALLY one that lands you in jail?!!) Next. To. Impossible. At least as far as I am aware lol o.o

I say let them get education in some format... keeps their minds a bit healthy rather than letting them rot. I believe that it isn't my place to judge... hell I am avoiding law and legal aspects of medicine just for that reason. I am no judge, saint, or anything like that. I figure it may also help them pass the time.

Afterall isn't that preferential to letting them do other things? It is said that idle hands are the devil's hands.

I'm pretty sure they won't allow teaching of anything potentially dangerous in there. It's all pre-regulated.

Well if there some kids who got in some trouble and are trying to go in the right direction, i wouldn't mind them getting an education....but then you have the other people who deserve to sit in jail and rot, they do not deserve anything of that sort.

Then I'd go with the rest of what I said :p

Keep their brains healthy and keep them busy with what they are learning. "Idle hands are the devil's hands" etc etc xD

I don't think they'll want to go the right direction if they're that hopeless.

i am not saying they shouldn't be given the opportunity to use the time productively. if you read my first reply in it's entirety, i said i have no problem with that. what i do have a problem with is adding to the cost on the taxpayer who is already paying for their stay.

That, I'll leave it to the government to answer you.
Look up some ridiculous spending our government has been spending for the past 2 decades or so. You're going to pour a bowl of hot soup on your head after reading it.
