MMOs and growing player insatiability

Lately I've been seeing a lot more people mention their boredom of Aion or other games, so I decided to think upon the topic of player insatiability when it comes to the entertainment factor of MMOs.

Generally, with more experience in games as a whole, but most specifically MMOs, players get a lot more shallow with their general enjoyment of the game and become harder to please. We stop thinking like kids enjoying a great game and start thinking more like processing units trying to hit peak efficiency.

Especially on a high rate server like Gamez, I bet theres a vast majority of people that think "I need x and x pieces of an ABG set to be able to own in PvP" or "Class x hits for 7439 damage with x skill, I should make that class instead because mine only hits for 2114 with x skill" as opposed to just enjoying the game for being a game.

The more experience a player has, the more they think only about mathematical concepts and how to win, whereas a player completely new to a game, especially one that has hardly even seen any games to begin with, will more likely just behold the game and enjoy what they see.

When I first started Aion, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I would do quests in Altgard not really realizing that I was over 10 levels higher than the quests I was attempting to finish, and I would gasp at all the amazing scenery, the music complementing the vast landscape and all these odd looking monsters I was killing.

Now I think "ugh..its going to take me all night to get to 55..then I have to transfer all my gear from my other character".

At what point did we stop and let ourselves be taken over by greed, hatred of other players, and desire only to be the strongest. At what point did we stop caring about the fun we were having, and care more about stirring up needless drama?

Lately I've been extremely bored of Aion myself even after just coming back, as I have insufficient gear to PvP with and I don't feel like earning back everything I used to have just to do that, so I've been planning on challenging myself to play Crystal, with no gear whatsoever, and enjoy it for what it is, just taking everything slowly and doing all the quests I can, instead of skipping everything to level faster, and see how much I can enjoy the game for its most basic implementations. Will anyone else challenge themselves, if they're bored of Aion and perhaps think too much in numbers and not enough in fun?

thats what mmo`s are. after u learn the game and get all the bis items the only thing u have left is being the BEST. u can only be the BEST with ultimate gear and ultimate char etc. hatred for other players is like hatred for those who shoot u in a battlefield, ppl dont think of online games as "games" anymore, they think of them the same as real life. thats when u get addicted to a game, and sometimes its hard to cure urself of that.

everybody gets bored at some point. we can say we enjoy playing something, but it's always ATM. and after that we get bored, and play something else ATM. then so on.. and another one is, "less challenge, more boredom"

Aion sucks truthfully... It's always the same things over and over and there's never anything different whatsoever.
If this game had more unique features at PvP(since this is a PvP server)maybe the people of Gamez would actually looks forward to Aion. But another reason as to why everyone is quitting and not as active as when they first started Aion is because of the many bugs this game has and as to how unbalanced it is. You look at other games such as GW2, Cabal, WoW etc, these games are much more balanced with a stable PvP system. In addition to this, games just get boring after a while...they really do. After about a year or so(maybe even months for some players)you just lose the taste you used to have for the game. As for me, I barely ever play, maybe 3 or 4 times a week for about an hour or so.

Personally, I'm waiting on GW2. PvP system = Awsome. Classes = Great. Scenery = Magnificent! UNREAL. PvE sytem/Quests = Amazing(you wont actually be dreading killing mobs and doing quests because of how different things are on this game...You choose your quests as you go along, or you can choose to go from lvl 1 to whatever the highest lvl by just PvPing if you like).

I can play Aion for a total of err.. two years and a bit more. 3-4 months per class to reach a point when I'm one of the strongest ;D

I'm still enjoying it, fortunately >.<

But I do agree with the mathematical concepts point, gradually moving from a basic state to some arbitrary state where one "NEEDS" that 2% extra attackspeed title or their character is weak and pathetic and they can't even play.

I've seen a lot of greed and stuff going around... where people will litterally aim only for the perfect tippy tippppppyyy top and its riddiculous to me. They can't even stand the thought of "OH GOD HOW DARE THIS CRIT MANASTONE BE +15, ITS NOT +17! IT MUST GO!" and its just like "lol wut, thats only 2 difference...".

It is like the purpose of skill, daring and effort completely vanished and was completely bottled into a lackluster canned supply of "goods". People changing class like no tomorrow. I remember the gladiator invasion, followed by sorcerer-mania, recently people couldn't get enough of assassin's bugged attackpower hitting for 4k damage a swing and everyone flooded that in droves, now its templars.

People truly can't find X that they like, and they will swing completely different playstyles. Its like ... "lol wut"?

For me my two classes I am best at are cleric/SM and gravitate to them generally.

    -Both use DoT's.
    -Both are Magic Based.
-Both are dependant on survivability and thinking rationally.
    -Kiting in pvp a lot

Although they are different in some ways, they share a lot of qualities.

But for these other people that make up the mass of the population?

Assasin one day, sorcerer the next and then templar?!?!?

To me that is almost blastphemy... it is insane. Completely throwing playstyles and enjoyment out the window... making multiple threads asking "WAT CLASS I PRLAAY???" and complaining about everything about them later in a QQ thread....

I believe it has something to do with society in general. We've moved from a society of effort to a canned-metropolis of being spood fed. This is especially so for kids in highschool who are like "lol real world, wat?" and probably do imagine their life being like vampire-diaries, twilight or some other insane permutation of mental-activity.

Likewise, they think only of the best of the best and "oh how dare they" if they don't get it.

Kinda like the stigma on "iphones". Reality? They suck compared to the other ones out. Hell, we have superphones now and the iphone is beating them... why? Because they are convinced and mentally dragged down thinking it is "the best". Ridiculous, honestly.

And likewise this mentality has been brought into gaming... "I need 2% more attackspeed!" "Omg you know... if I get this 1% more pvp attack from my bow I will be BEAST....!" "Ewww... I fused this weapon and I found out that the other one gives 1 more attack point -breaks weapon fusion apart- time to qq on forums for one!"

    Kinda depressing really :<

But, I am at least still "mystified" by aion. Minus the zergs :p

Well, sometimes I play other games (that I haven't beaten yet, ME2, Dragon age..need to buy DA2 still. QQ) Just cause there isn't an MMO factor, and I enjoy those games because I play to have fun. Learning the Aion lore is fun as well, but you get ganked, and zerged too much in Gamez to enjoy learning it passed eltnen/heiron.

As old saying goes: Too much of a good thing is bad.

Same with Aion and games alike. If you enjoy it from start, you're likely to keep on playing for the same feeling on enjoyment, even when you're more frustrated with it than delighted. When game goes from having fun to enduring it for sake of X, it's the end. So many games I've been through where I've logged in for daily quests and chatting only. When a game turns into a day job, better move on.

Personally the way to get around the point of tedious working is to take a break. I could keep on banging my head against the wall and get a headache in the progress, or I could go play something else, or go try a new recipe or just go for a walk outside.

Have to say, my HD dying has been a blessing as well as a bummer.. Haven't been able to play for almost 2 weeks, but that has once again reloaded my batteries that I'm EAGER to play. That might be dimmed by the first zerg I run into upon returning, but that remains to be seen.

And as Aegis said, people change classes according to trends. I can't claim to be a 100% on one class, since I enjoy the different classes on different days, depending on what sort of group I'm running with. People have forgotten to have fun with their class, instead the blind need to be the best has consumed them. Best class is you and you alone. Some classes are harder to beat than others, but that's just the way of the game.

Also quoting Aegis on his point of people asking on forums what class to play. That is just the silliest thing I've ever read.. It's like asking in real life "what I wanna be when I grow up, I want to make a lot of money with minimum work. It don't matter whether I enjoy it or not, I just want .."

Some get their kicks out of being best of single class (Masterblock for one, he's played tank classes just about every game we've played together), I get my kicks out of finding out how all classes work. Learning what their skills do, what their roles in the group are and so on. Ofc you can learn this by watching other players and asking questions, but for me the only way to learn is by doing things myself.

The desire to be the best.. Maybe I'm weird but I've never had that. To me the sense of doing my best, is enough. So what if I die? S*** happens. Singleminded pvp'ing for the sake of a title has never been ideal way to go for me, I rather have a great big laugh on skype with the guys over the zerg that just ran over us.

Will I kiss Aion goodbye when I find better game? Probably, but nothing says I can't come back once time has blurred all the bad memories ;)

    Bit rambling answer :annoyed:

And when it does work it gets broken allready next patch.... I seriously am bored of zerging running back and forward all time isnt much fun pvp, before when they opened shields in reshata it was atleast fun option when u get bored of zergs u could go fly pvp,, now all u have is zergs... Or before u had stormwing droping and instances droping nice stuff so if u were bored u could just go farm... Ehh , On my opinion zergs ruin everything . I like to pvp and stuff , but ... Server is really ****ed atm. Bugs, hackers , zergs... I would like to see maps like gelk , with only a couple of persons. Instead of 30 , like 3. That would be awesome. Usually when I get zerged , I just rage quit and ye , that's what I have been doing.

Well I'm not saying why people are bored, I'm simply pointing out that people have started to view games with a much more shallow perspective. Instead of seeing a fun game, they see numbers and what they need to get, like Aegis said. Regardless of what eventually causes the boredom, they'll still probably move on to the next game and do the same thing, only caring about what they need to do and what they need to get. Nothing else about the game matters after the initial effect wears off.

    I disagree.
If gamez is already this boring, I can't imagine what the horrendous grinding on retail would feel like. Perhaps it's considered a challenge for some, but it's a deal breaker for me.

I don't have time to put any serious effort into it.

Aion is not boring when an organized raid happens, but after that it becomes boring again.
    and so on...

Retail = Grinding, Retail PvP = Whoever has the best gear wins, and gear is by no means easy to get (pvp stuff)
