Again, stumbled on Reddit and found this quote by George Carlin. I've heard of him a couple of times before, but never knew what he did for a living. One thing I admire about him is his tendency to NOT censor himself, be it live or not.

So, what are your thoughts regarding the claimed "superpower of the world" America? For me, I believe that it's still WAY better than the shit third-world countries are going through, but somehow it's declining really quickly. There's hardly a chance for anything exceptional, worthy of the "American dream" status, to surface nowadays.

Everything is shadowed by the corporate giants. Even my high school Civics teacher said it straight to us that "the government does NOT work for you, but for corporate interest", which gave me the doubt of whether all this hype coming to America was worth anything (except for a better education, which is seemingly ripping students off also.)

To be honest, the things he talks about are pretty obvious. The big corporations kinda rule the living beings of this planet. Also, the government doesn't work for you, you work for it!

    He was a radical.
Sure, the government doesn't do everything for you, it's not expected. America is a capitalist nation.
You have just as much of an opportunity to live the "american dream" as they did when they started their companies.
It's hard, and it's supposed to be.

As poiz said, you work for the government, they don't work for you.
    It's a free market.

As bad as he thinks the country is, most of the things he says, he could only do in America.
In most places he'd be jailed, or killed.

He's right with some things, but ignorant to many others.

Why does my mind usually translate this to: "The sooner you succeed, the better off you are"?

I might be wrong (most definitely,) but is it truly fair for newcomers? Being successful in business doesn't rely on hard work alone but many other factors, some of which aren't favorable for newcomers (for example, the right industry in war time would be way better off than others.)

I don't know why it translates to that, but sure. That's true.

I don't believe everyone starts out the same, but everyone has a chance to do the same thing.
I worked for many years before being able to afford college, even with grants, and fasfa. As opposed to kids who had parents who could pay their way through universities and state colleges.

Hard work is defined in many different ways.
It could be from the steel worker who, through hard labor became the factory owner.
Or the nerd, through use of resources, and small, but aggressive expansion, created his own factory.

You can learn from the past, but you can't go back to it.
People might look back at this time and say "It was easy then, their economy was lower, and the amount of competition wasn't so high. Best time to start a business, easiest time for newcomers"

Times have changed, opportunities have not.

Well not sure if he is ignorant or not but he certainly was around longer than any of us on Gamez. For us it may of been ignorant but for him it certainly wasn't. America changes every 10 years.

    Just cause he's old doesn't mean he's smart. =P
He's talking about America as if it were controlled by a tyrant.

Not saying cause he's smart cause he's old, but no matter how you see it, he certainly has more experienced than any of us here. But ain't really fair to say he's ignorant though, we have no idea what America has shown to him personally, it's a country that is in the face of the world but filled with many secrets behind the curtains.

I prefer going through the "American Dream" bullshit failing at it working for the government like a slave in their forces than being hungry 24/7 in a third world country not doing anything for my own sake.

The ironic part is that you still get hungry people in the richest country in the world.

America certainly has it problems for sure. There are those who take advantage at the misery of others. There are those who have their secrets for sure. One thing I will say for American though is say what u want about Americans but the general public is hard working ppl who care about others. America has done a lot for other countries and defended those who cant defend themselves and supported those who cant supported themselves. It has cost us a lot and will continue to do so even at our own detriment. We may go down but we will go down with a spirit and an attitude of giving and helping. The backbone of America and all she has done is the good hardworking ppl in it. Not the bozos and clowns that have betrayed us in our country.

Well man, not all third world countries are down the drain. Sometimes I admire what they have which first world countries have lost/coming to an end.
