Aion is running off the crysis engine (previously a tech demo for nVidia's purpose, but was found later useful and developed into a game). The Crysis Engine is very smooth and stable, but the way Aion was created with the engine wasn't. It definitely wasn't poorly coded, it's just that NCSoft was too lazy to apply fixes and fix their own coding. Connections aren't unstable, it might be that theres too many connections and that the server is lagging or that it's you from your end. The way they set up the connections to the server is fine. Private servers were never meant to be anyways.

 

Indeed there wasn't supposed to be private servers but say someone wanted to play in a different region (its odd, I know, but it happens), then they'd have to figure out how to do that which is a pretty annoying process, as opposed to some games just using the region with an IP based connection.

And yeah, nothing against the CryEngine (afaik its from FarCry, not Crysis?) just the way the game loads and crashes is more than annoying for me.

 

Keep thinking about the game that CryEngine made, Crysis.
I never had a problem with starting the game, but whenever I log in, I have to wait a couple seconds because it would crash. This never happened to me on retail so I suppose it's a server-sided problem.

Crysis only came later on in other builds of the engine, you could hardly say its "Crysis' engine" Aion is still running on the first versions
