    There are many studies that show it does, and many studies which shows it doesn't. The problem with even semi controversial topics like this is that you will be able to find several concrete information supporting either side. Personally I find my mind being burnt a little bit, but at the same time my cognitive reflexes have been improved.

    Its proven that it makes you more socially withdrawed... and what it does do to your mind is that it makes it more open to virtual related stuff, you question less, and try to absorb more.

    If you are up to competitive gaming and other high level plays of video games, it does make your mind smarter.
    Example of this is by playing RTS games like Starcraft and such, and team-based games which requires teamwork and cooperation.
    At high level play, whenever you lose in these kinds of games, you reflect to yourself of what mistakes you've done, how can you be better next time and how can you improve your play.

    On RTS games like Starcraft, it's like playing chess, but way more complicated; since you have to manage your army, timing, evaluation of resource, when to expand, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your units, mindsets, counterplays, etc.
    This way, it makes your brain process alot more.

    It depends wich video game...
    It is sure that is not a TAB+random skill game that sharp your mind (any allusion to Aion is pure casuality...)

    Then you need to consider what do you do instead of plaiyng:
    if your alternative is beer on sofa and a dumb program, maybe even Aion can sharp your mind.
    If instead of playing you read The Einstein Theory of Relativity maybe it will a better way to become more smart...
