I don't understand why this is just picking up now. Invisible Children visited my college campus years ago when I was a freshman (I graduated in 2010...). At that point the war was already over - Kony and the LRA had been pushed out of Uganda into Congo. It was more about funding the displaced children's education and finding them a stable home.

Let me make an analogy of what Kony 2012 is accomplishing. Think about if someone showed you the September 11th 2001 attacks today. You'd see people suffering, looking for family, and rubble everywhere.... Do you expect to find any of that if you went to NY to help today? The LRA is no longer relevant in Uganda. It hasn't been for almost a decade now.

Right now it's about recovery, not Kony. How to usurp power from the corrupt government, how to reunite families.

Unfortunately, this little movement will accomplish nothing. Remember Rwanda? Remember southern Sudan? Donating a few dollars and sleeping on the streets of downtown won't help anyone in Uganda. The American government also wouldn't intervene there due to there being no benefit to our country (sorry, that's how the world works).

As for why people don't have movements like this in most parts of Africa... it's simple:

There aren't true democracies in Africa. You'll get killed for opening your mouth.

As for Invisible Children (the people responsible for Kony 2012):

That's 32 cents for every dollar donated going to Ugandans. Hell, in many cases not even Ugandans, but their government. That's among the lowest of any not-for-profit organization in the world (and there's a ton of corrupt organizations out there).

The Ugandan military itself (the people who repelled the LRA) are *just as bad* in some ways - infamous for killing and raping innocents. Of course Invisible Children wouldn't tell you that.

Just please. Enough with the social media hyped fad movements. Do you believe killing one person (Joseph Kony) would accomplish anything? Did killing Osama Bin Ladin destroy the Taliban? This is an issue that's so multifaceted... it's absurd to think it's that simple.

We can't just capture one dude and call it a day. Central Africa needs multi-lateral, international support and attention, not just to rid itself of a bogeyman, but to develop the institutions necessary to prevent bogeymen from existing in the first place. There's a reason there are no Joseph Kony's in the United States. It's because we have institutions that don't allow it. Getting rid of Kony does nothing to prevent the next Kony from stepping up in his place, and in fact our myopic fixation on one individual makes it even MORE likely that another evil man will replace Kony, while the real, more boring / less sexy issues that plague Africa persist.

I'm not trying to hate, I laud IC for bringing attention to the issue. Making it relevant after the fact and banking in b/c of it is idiotic to me.

 

The power of the media. See that it is able to motivate and even exaggerate. Al Qaeda's still recruiting by the way, even with Osama Bin Laden deceased.
