I thought Idiocracy was a comedy, instead it seems like it was a dramatic prophecy. It is one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen.

Some people, they never learn about the Edit button. May it should be removed. :)

On the topic: To be honest, the story like of the movie is pretty interesting, that in modern society, natural selection is indifferent toward intelligence, with the result that in the future, stupid people (who reproduce more often) will greatly outnumber the intelligent. I mean, just look at the countries where people, the majority is uneducated.

The other day I had a conversation with a woman on a forum for serious and mature discussions about anything. The article was about how long people live based on their education level. In that article, a research was presented where it was stating that people who are having the Highest education, they are living longer than those who just graduated from the Elementary or High School. It was based on facts, that the people who are having greater knowledge, they learn how to value their bodies and extend their lives. On the other hand, people are less smart, they are having more bad habits, such us smoking, using drugs, alcohol, etc.

There were other parameters in the research, like the stress level, the job difficulty, the life style, the financial status, the happiness level.

Overall, that woman was an Elementary graduate, and she was trying to prove that the life's experience is the key for a longer and happier life, but not the education. I would disagree with her 100%, but seriously, people who know more stuff, who got rich scientific knowledge, they could survive longer in general lines.

@Sauuron, you are wrong. They are not trolling him. They are just that stupid. I'm surrounded by idiots every single day. There is no doubt that this is what America is actually like. Which is why I made my post. The movie put the fear of God into me because it accurately depicts the path of America, and slowly, the rest of the world. I have to deal with this on an everyday basis. You will also, soon enough.

@Xartino, irrelevant. Look at the American education system, the influence of media, the culture gutter. It matters not how much longer smarter people live because there are less and less smart people in America. America has a very strong anti-intellectualism. Think about the idea of "geeks," "nerds," etc. It makes no sense, but this juvenile idea is present in every single school in America. People who drink their brain to oblivion, partake in drugs, act like sluts, etc. are rewarded. Stupidity pays off. The lack of intelligence in America grows as people idolize Jersey Shore, Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus, and Katy Perry rather than even knowing who Albert Einstein was, let alone what he did.

Plus, the point of the movie was that dumb people reproduce much faster than intelligent people, creating a dumber and dumber society. I doubt we've reached the pinnacle of this, since evolution and natural selection don't occur THAT fast, but due to our horrendous media and anti-intellectualism, America is reaching that level. And don't think the rest of the world is far behind. American culture is our biggest export, and signs of this intellectual degradation are everywhere, most especially in our neighbor to the north, Canada.

Yeah, we are pretty dumb and those people totally speak for a whole. I'm so dumb, I'm going to a stupid community college instead of a state college.
Damn my dumb poor self, geez.

Not to be a douche but America is not USA. Its a whole continent. Since I am from America but not from USA I would like you to make a nice distinction. Thank you very much.

Well, I acknowledge that this is spreading faster than chemical fire. Another thing that is pretty interesting, is that there is not an age limit to the idiocracy. You could argue that is something that is happening now with all the idiot garbage media going on, but some of the folks are contemporary to Einstein for instance. I say it has to do with the life style people in USA lives, just my take on this though, I dont live there... Lucky me.

Some of the answers are truly shocking... "Al qaeda = masonic order" I facedesk pretty hard there.

Though I agree that it seems people as a whole are becoming increasingly dumber, IQ scores have risen 24 points since 1914. You see, IQ tests are set up to where the average score is 100. What happens, then, if people keep scoring higher and higher to where the average is no longer 100? You reconstitute the scoring to compensate for the higher results, the outcome being that 100 remains the average (a method known as the Flynn effect). This means that while scores may seem similar from one generation to the next, the scores are constantly being adjusted down because people are doing better on the tests, so a 100 from 80 years ago would not be a 100 today. Also, the scores for reading and mathematics in the past 40 years have gone up worldwide as a testament to the quality of education getting better. Graduate rates are also on an upward trend.

Besides, being ignorant (like every single person in this video) doesn't necessarily denote being dumb. Anyone who has taken an IQ test knows that it's not about what you know, but how you think; Pattern recognition, expression, interpretation, perspective, observation, etc. Regardless, the video was damn funny to watch.

Well, I try to keep up with the education levels of the entire planet. I just like to know about the people who surround me. As my friends I don't judge any of them you act silly at the age their are, I used to be a prank myself at the high school, but I also had the highest marks in my class. I mean, you can be both, as long as you know the limits and when to be serious or back off.

The problem doesn't come from the US, trust me. The problem is that the education of a country raises the salary at new levels. The more study title you hold, the more you will ask to be awarded for your services, even as a truck driver. The experience is one factor that plays a big role in the job market, but the second is the knowledge and how fast your mind works. A slow learner won;t be ever awarded jobs that are high paid and demand a lot of critical decisions to be taken in a daily base.

In most countries, the governments got as a primary goal to lower the amount of educated people, and raise the amount of the people who cannot have critical thought. They want working power over evolution of the mankind. Hence, we have killed this planet. The TV is best invention to help the governments to make people dumber than what they already are. The only way to keep having critical thought is to expand your knowledge every day, to never let your mind sleep. If you let others to take from you the ability to have critical thought, then you will become automatically another member of the working power.

People with knowledge they are people with the purest form of power that a human being can possess, at least now.

    A) those people tend to be the majority in the US. I live in the US. If you're not going to agree that we're surrounded by idiots, then you must be blind.

    B) Why is there some distinction between community college and state college? Where I am, state colleges are looked down upon just as much as community college, but college is hardly some sort of standard. Most people nowadays go to college to party, not for education. Hence, we have the Occupy movement filled with young idiots who realized that their partying cost them a fortune, and they feel entitled to money.

@DDraig, point taken. Sorry. It's just, people from the USA are colloquially known as Americans, although I understand what you mean and how it can be offensive.

@Badrobot, this was just one video. These people aren't special cases but the norm here. While not everyone is as stupid as these people, most people aren't very smart either. There's a certain sense of arrogance and entitlement that pervades our culture here, not to mention how crappy our culture is in the first place. I don't blame the people, I blame our culture.

@SweetNoms, comparing averages from 1914 is not really fair. Back then, during wartime America, the college rates, literacy rates, etc. would, of course, all be lower. However, I was reading a study talking about the outliers, the geniuses back then. Apparently, while our averages might have risen a bit, a person with the IQ of Mozart being born today is almost out of the question. Also, the Flynn effect has been leveling out for a while now, and in fact, has started to reverse.

I agree with your distinction between ignorance and stupidity, but trying to define intelligence has always been hard to pinpoint. Either way, our celebrity driven culture, reality TV shows, etc. all have a negative impact. 3 mass shootings in 1 month, and it seems that all of these people keep getting more and more media coverage, and people LOVE it. Plus, the distinction is irrelevant when you think of these two horrifying thoughts.

    1) These people vote
    2) These people have children

China is a bad example, they are walled behind heavy political issues, besides they control media and restrict most of what we are discussing now from entering in their territory. If they have a similar lack of knowledge is because that, and not because they choose to. In fact Chinese people are very understanding of their culture and their complexities, things that in the western cultures right now are null.

This is drastic... while maybe generalizing is wrong, but is terrifying what the people of the video are teaching to their kids, grand kids, brothers, etc...

I also blame religion by the way... recently the pope approved that the law of gravity to be accepted by the catholic church, and not to be considered as a blasphemy anymore... really, and with the amount of people that constantly hits their chests praying for crap they dont comprehend, rejecting everything else.

I never disagreed. I sarcastically stated that these people spoke for every individual in American, which is obviously a lie. I'm indifferent until I run out of rebuttals.
Seriously? State colleges usually have higher standards than community colleges, not to mention the fact that you'd have to adjust to living life as an individual by getting a job and getting by on your own.
Why would college ever be looked down upon? I can't believe you said that. Where do you come from? College does set a high standard. Even though some troublemakers can get into the easier ones, they wouldn't stand all of their years and graduate without dishing out some serious effort.

Well, Chinese people choose to be this way. They are how many there, one massive riot of only 15~20% of their population could change many things, but they don't want to.

You judge the power that controls the people, but you forget that the few who control where and will always come from and be elected by the many. It's a circle that none of the both sides want to stop because of the advantages it has for both.

It matters which state college you are talking about. My point was, unless you are talking about very specific colleges (UofI, UMich, UVA, etc.), state colleges tend to be party colleges. Community colleges are used by a lot of people who can't afford to go to a private/public school. Either way, it's irrelevant to this topic.

Talking to a chinese spokeman from a company, which i have nice relationship with. I asked him what he though about their government, the case of the Himalayas, etc, etc, etc. He gave pretty elusive answers. But when I cornered him he said that the government was doing the best for their people and that it was all bad influence from the outside. Interesting right?

But that is the political view they have, they accepted it, is not our problem, and is not what they know. They know pretty much all of their inside world. The case exposed by abdcefg is how western people, specifically people from the United States dont know shit about their own country and the rest of the world. Being a country that speak of freedom of speech and freedom of access to information, in their own hypocrite view of course. Thats why China is a bad example. Thats all I am pointing.

And by the way, the reason China does not want to change, is because they dont care about us. Is enough that we have interest in them.
