    Rarou and Nanashi are both foreigners which is kind of ironic that most honorable and samurailike people in the movie are some of the only ones NOT from Japan or China. It was never revealed what nationality Nanashi was. Rarou was part of the assassins from China looking for that immortality medicine and he uses a Chinese fighting style, though from he is definitely western. I would say that he's mostly likely from Europe is probably Geman, Russian, or German, Irish Russian. :D
