Amazing experience!!! a 25 day marathon of SAO anime. Come to think of it anime series are no different than tv series! It is just as addictive!!!! Now I come back to this forum wanting more! I'm loving the romantic stories!(clannad) But am now looking for some action animes(no naruto bleach onepiece fairytail recommendations please) I'm too flooded with those images in my facebook wall coz most of the people around me watch those popular-long-running series and I just don't have time for that, I'm not saying they are bad either. I've seen naruto in the filipino-dubbed in its early episodes, it was funny and entertaining. Onepiece and bleach too :) I live with wonderful younger brothers and they used to watch them on TV years ago it was filipino-dubbed. What is Ghost in the shell? Your thoughts? I've browsed some anime list but there were too many and only ranked. And I also saw there are movies and mangas of it. Which ones should I watch first? Also I don't like reading mangas, it doesn't have color.

Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex are tv series composed of 2 seasons of 24 episodes followed by an OVA named Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society.
Is based on the manga of Masamune Shirow made in the 80s. Is a CyberPunk techno feast of cyborgs and what not, as typical of the cyberpunk genre, romance is kept to a bare minimum, but the action is superb, though very dense in the plot department. There are 2 movies that are very interesting and beautifully done, but again heavy on the plot area enough to make SAO a child play, specially the second movie is still weird.

If you want more of the same author of SAO, watch Accel World, another 24 episodes series that ran last year just before SAO, is good, the mechanics are interesting, the plot is ok, but you might have issues with the main character, is non common to say at least. But is a very good show about virtual reality and reality intervention, if you can pass that.

There is a lot more, but I am more inclined in the more cyberpunk, mechas, action genre, So I cant advice much than this in your particular tastes.

But those are good picks I think.

Every single one of those is good. Add Steins;Gate and Guilty Crown to that list and you have a list of anime that fits my tastes perfectly. I'll vouch for Shinsekai yori any day, also.

SAO -Good during it's first half, shit during the second half. ALfheim Online arc dragged the series down so much and this is coming from a person who prefers Suguha's character than Asuna's.

Guilty Crown - Good animation and sound but the story is too cliche. Protagonist that has no backbone and so much of a wimp. Heck, Ikari Shinji of Neon Genesis Evangelion would probably be better than Ouma Shu. At least Shinji has a valid reason to act like a pussy. Don't get me started with Inori whose only real use was pretty much to be scabbard of Shu's sword and to sing songs from time to time which wasn't that bad (thanks to EGOIST).

Gantz - I had so much expectation from this one since it was recommended to me by 2 good friends and were insisting so badly that I watch it only to be disappointed. Could barely get through every episode and the final episode of season 1, I had to fast-forward just so I can get over with it already.

Elfen Lied - The only thing it had going for it was it's gore and literally nothing else. Bad story, bad animation and bad sound. Despite being one of the most gory anime out there, I was like "meh" the entire time.

    You should watch:

Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners - Good story, amazing animation and sound and the fact that this 7-part movie wasn't released in chronological order makes it even more interesting. It has action, gore, thriller, mystery and romance all put together into one amazing work without turning it into one hell of a cluster****.

Fate/Zero - Dark magic thrown into modern society setting with an eargasmic soundtracks, movie-quality animation and good story. Action here is top notch just like in Kara no Kyoukai (because they came from the same studio, ufotable). Just don't get your hopes up on it's sequel (Fate Stay Night) because it was adopted by a bad studio (thanks a lot Studio DEEN for runing F/SN) but a new adaptation is on the way which will be done by ufotable as well.

5 Centimeters Per Second - One of the most realistic romance anime I've seen so far. Amazing animation and sound with a good story to complement it but it has a bittersweet ending then again that's what makes it more realistic.

The Garden of Words - Basically the same as 5 Centimeters Per Second but has a different story going on.

ef: Tale of Memories & ef: Tale of Melodies - One of the great romance titles out there. The only downfall is that it's dialogue heavy so if you don't pay enough attention while watching, you might find it hard to understand what's going on which is very unlikely compared to other romance titles.

True Tears - Drama heavy, great art, good story. Nothing that really stands out besides the art but it is well done for a 13 episode romance anime. At least it doesn't have a wimp MC or useless/annoying heroine.

Kimi ga Nozomu Ein - Average animation and story but has a good portrayal of what a realistic romance anime is if you dump tragedy on it.

Darker than Black - If I am to describe this into 2 words, it'll probably be badass and cool (talking about Season 1 and Gaiden, yea I know season 2 was shit).

Canaan - Gives off the same feeling as Darker than Black. It's just in here, characters relied more on guns and not on supernatural abilities.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom - Story about 2 assassins (later on 3). Romance plus action anime with a somewhat mind**** ending.

Since you're already watching Ghost in the Shell, I wouldn't add it on the list up there. Just make sure you watch everything from Ghost in the Shell franchise (movies and tv series) and in English dubbed because Elizabeth McGlynn did a brilliant job in playing the role of Major Kusanagi. Also, tv series first before the movies.

    Kimi ga Nozomu Ein

Based of a Visual Novel (Eroge) of Age. Funny that is on the same universe of MuvLuv but in the Extra verse. If anyone has the time to play this, I would encourage to.

VNs for me in general are boring if not, it'll be too good that I would end up hating why I even bothered because when the time comes that it gets an anime adaptation, there wouldn't be as much fun watching it compared to if I didn't know anything about it. The same reason why I don't read manga or light novels.

Its a choice, but 90% of the time the anime adaptation is a pale reflection of the original work. Sometimes the story deserves to be watched in its original source format.
Take SAO for instance. It was really butchered in the anime version.
