I'm from a small town called Jasper and everyone there is like super proud of their "German heritage". The schools and churches all slam it into our faces when we were little kids about how we should be proud of our heritage and the different events and activities that we do to "celebrate" it.

I was born in America, home of the fatasses, but most of my ancestors came to America in about the late 1800's to early 1900's. I actually traced some of my family history when I was in middle school for a project and learned that most of my great great and great great great grandparents came to America during the big immigrant period from Germany, Ireland, and Russian and considering that my ancestors have lived in those areas far longer than the hundred or so years my family has lived in America I consider myself GermanIrishRussian.

nick, as I said, if it goes with the matter of "my ancestors have lived in those countries far more than my direct relatives have lived in america" then almost the whole world is supposed to be something else than what they legally are
with your logic the people in constantinople should be called greeks, but they're not, they're turkish, they've lived in turkey, grew with turkish people, learnt turkish traditions, and so on

if your dad was born in germany or your grandpa moved to america from germany or something then yes, you have german roots

I've traced my ancestry as far back as the 1600's. All my relatives I could trace back to that time period are all from Germany, Ireland, and Russian. Therefore I consider myself American with GermanIrishandRussian heritage. I don't give a fuck if you disagree. I'm GermanIrishRussian and I got the fuckin charts and graphs to prove it.
