That's probably the closest we will come to actual mecha's in quite a while. Even with all of the technological advances that we progress through every 2 years, I doubt we will have the capability to build something like a Gundam, or even close to a Gundam. Unless, of course, we happen to find an ancient archive of data and blueprints on Mars that was created by a species known as the "Protheans".... *refers to Mass Effect...*

That image bothers me so much...

Why are there lights inside the ventilation systems?
Anyone who knows something about the RX-78-2 will know that those are the air/ventilation entrances for the Core Fighter, the hydraulics for the shoulders/head systems and the Minovsky Reactor in the back.
    Ruined!

And real size mech? mmm Nice as it could be, is totally unpractical, even for space.

Japan restrictions for an army were lifted this year I think, if not next. So they will be able to have their own armed forces and not just an Autodefense one as it is now. And by 2019 they are planning to have an Space Force, in what they call the fourth battlefield. All this with the approval of the USA, of course.

In a personal note, if they make a fully fledged Gundam like mech (unlikely), I suppose I'll abandon my current life and become a pilot there.

Well Japan was a pacifist nation because after the US nuked them in WW2, they surrendered and as part of the terms of their surrender they could no longer have an "official army. They basically just have an "international police force" and if they ever get invaded or need any help then the US and others would send troops to help them out.

But now I think they may try to start rebelling against that, OR they know something we don't know about weird stuff going on the ocean. Remember that in Pacific Rim, 2019 wasn't far off from when the first Kaiju attacked. I think it's also a possibility that they are preparing for that.

Gundam vs Kaiju, this should be fun.

They already have the technology "Beyond any other country could ever have" not to mention their unbelievably super strong "Army" they've been facepalming US for a very long time. now they wan't in and show us all how it's done.

    Not really.

The Gundam is only 18 -25 meter top (The Unicorn Gundam is the tallest single unit so far, without considering mobile armors or special units)
While Kaijus are about 40 meters tall, one could say it would a pretty one sided fight. But the main thing is that all Gundams fly, and pretty fast as well, they all have long distance weaponry, including ballistic, explosive and energy ammunition plus energy swords that are pretty damn badass and some units even energy shielding and energy dissipation systems, like the I-field, making the EMP firing Kaiju an annoyance at best. Hell there is a Gundam that can even fire nuclear warheads, the GP-02.

So Kaijus have it bad with Gundams and would be a pretty short and boring fight.

And if all this fails they can also self-destruct

Yeah I know that Gundams are a lot smaller than kaijus, but they do have high speed and maneuverability along with powerful weapons so they can easily dance around a huge kaiju whittling it down.

Let's say no nukes though as that would be lame, and most fights with kaijus would be near populated areas and it would be self defeating to kill the kaiju with a weapon that would also destroy the entire city.

So conventional weapons only, missiles, and guns, and energy swords. The kaiju can probably withstand guns and missiles so the Gundam would have to use the sword and dance around and cut up the weak spots.

It would be a Mecha vs Monster version of the Viper vs the Mountain, during which Oberyn was much faster and more skilled, but at the same time it was clear that if you make even a single mistake against an opponent like that then you are fucked.

Well, yeah, you could see it that way.
I can even imagine a fight with the Mobile Suits from Ms 8th team series, doing guerrilla warfare in the city against Kaijus.
    That would be damn awesome.
