So I need a new laptop. My current one sucks. I need a LAPTOP, not a desktop, for school purposes as well as gaming/media purposes. I have one in mind, but thought I could get a bunch of opinions before I spend my money.

    http://www.malibal.com/veda/
    that's the one I want.

So opinions for different laptops (need links) are welcome also, telling me why its better than my current choice, or telling me if my current choice is good.

    Budget is up to $3,000.

    Thanks for the help ;P.

    1.9k base price? Jeez >.>

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220695

    Here's what I have, I payed $1,649.99 for it 3ish months ago, comes with a built in 8gb ram and pretty much all the same specs. The one you put up looks a lot better, case wise, but if I wanted that I would have went with Alienware. Asus is the best imo ^^;

Also, the one I put is kind of heavy, it's not tooo ideal for moving around with you, that's the only real problem I have with it. ><

I dislike it a lot to, and it's to heavy >:

but I wanted functionality over eyecandy so bleh, I could have spent another $700 to upgrade my processor by a generation, lose out on 2gb of ram and go with an Alienware, but bleh.

yours is nice, but the one from my site actually ends up being cheaper by 200 dollars or so, and it comes with a nice warranty

Honestly I'd just be very careful with the battery life.

If you are using this both for school AND gaming then that is a mixture I can't really full-heartedly suggest.

I find on campus that it is easy to go a full day without going to a plugin (especially when you incorporate lab work/general additional labs) and etc ontop of that.

I'd aim for a battery life of approximately 4-5 hours for school at least.

In terms of gaming though, I agree that I would -NEVER- go below an i7 processor or a super high end video card. Nor would I go below a 15" screen (personal preference... my current laptop has a 17")

    I speak from P E R S O N A L experiance when I say that a gaming laptop will be a brutal transition to a school laptop... and vice versa.

#1: I get at BEST 2 hours from a fully charged battery that I've kept in brilliant condition... 9 cell and I even have the extra battery slit to boost that...

#2: Anything "GAMING" related is -heavy!!!!- my laptop weighs at least 10-15 pounds and is a fair bit of a clunker considering how large it is. If you go for a gaming grade laptop chances are they'll probably be a fair bit wider than a conventional laptop (I personally won't suggest a notebook to you, as I DESPISE them myself).

#3: Anything "gaming" related is very expensive and STANDS OUT from the crowd... I don't care if you have a billion security guards on your campus... there is theft... everywhere and anywhere, to think otherwise would to be CONCIETED. I personally try my best to blend in... but you take a alienware or a fancy looking laptop to lecture? You stand out like a soab cause it looks amazing and you suddenly jump leaps and bounds up the "priority list" of criminals.

And no I am not stretching the truth, whatever campus you go to... no matter what faculty you are in, there will be very desperate people. (And people off the street can even walk in and sit in your lecture too).

Also not many laptops ACTUALLY have proper ventillation or heat-sinks... a gaming latop with all of the very high end spec parts will product MASS amounts of heat... So either way you'lll be murdering your heat sinks (which leads to laptop failure) or you'll have an annoyingly loud fan.

And as much as a warranty is nice... taking a laptop and making it your own and then having it break down "yay warranty is still in effect!"

life SUCKS for the 6 weeks it is gone. Oh, and don't count on any company/other to be able to fix it... gaming laptops usually have specialzed parts which make them hard to track/pinpoint down even with the best "small-scale company". So kiss it goodbye for 6 weeks and grovel in misery.

    -------------------------That being said---------------------

I keep my gaming laptop and school laptop 100% separate.

Also since I do a LOT of formal presentations I prefer to keep one laptop to be an apple (yes, I will be flamed for this... but apple does provide the best programs for many preformance things) and then for coding as well as gaming and a whole 95% of my other activities I keep a windows 7 laptop.

    So I'd suggest:

#1: Apple Macbook Pro 15": if you are into presentation software as well as video editing/very demanding applications then the 13" pro can't hold all you want (also the 13" screen is pitiful, at best) and you can deck this out very well to suit your needs... the large SSD that you can get is a beautiful addition to the laptop as it is very nice!

The note taking programs are VERY accessable and intuative... I find this convenient even for diagram work (which most people stray from compters when it comes to drawing down diagrams).

It also has a VERY great battery life... it lasts on 100% brightness with little-to-no power saving mode for at least 5 hours.

It IS possible to also use bootcamp to play games on this, not an issue... but I also have to admit that it isn't the best... if I am in a boring anatomy lecture I can play Gamez easily enough.

Another positive is that at least on my campus/faculty it is not that uncommon to see other students with a macbook, meaning that you aren't standing out too much from the crowd when you pull this out.

Also another benifit is that it really doesn't suffer from virus softwars and etc... and the trackpad is very intuative and I find it actually a little bit better than my "gaming laptop".

#2: You seem to be on the right side for the gaming one.

Aside from that I think I've made my point... gaming + school can not come into a laptop.

And if you really think you'll bother switch-charging 3 batteries every night and lugging them to school you are batshit crazy and a liar lol.

Also with a core i7 processor if you are running on battery on a normal laptop (idk why my mac can manage this) you can never really get the full real-meal-deal from the computer... the battery will poof out within seconds/minutes. Don't expect to even be able to play crysis on the go for more than 10 lol.

    Hope this helps you decide!

not worried about battery-life. I guess I said it wrong. I want a gaming laptop, but a laptop and not a desktop.
