So I met this man today, an ex-lieutenant in the Navy Seals. If anyone knows anything about them, they go through the toughest training possible, they are an elite unit. I started talking to him, and I was amazed at what kind of stuff he had to do...crazy stuff like having your hands tied around your back and your feet tied together and bobbing up and down in ten feet water 50 times (http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/navy-seal-11.jpg).

But I was more amazed at the other stuff he had done, going to Rwanda when he was 17 to help the refugees, travelling to Bosnia, Cambodia, etc. Hearing his stories really made me feel bad about myself. Maybe because even though I've done my fair share of community work, it's always been self-serving. I was genuinely upset about how I was living my life. I never expect to show the dedication, hard-work, patriotism, and courage a Navy Seal leader like him demonstrates, but even before that, as a teenager, he was already helping the world. I felt that my life so far had not accomplished anything. And he inspired me, and thats nothing easy, to actually try and change.

I thought I'd share this story because I really want to hear the responses of other people...and I think it'd be interesting to see responses from gamers especially ;>.

but that's what I mean...our accomplishments are centered around ourselves, not our actions for others. I mean, I don't expect everyone to demonstrate the qualities he did, but I feel like I should, at least in a lesser degree.

I'm simple, I don't really care to accomplish much before I die except raise good kids and live a good life, I don't wanna change the world or anything like that..

Personally, I haven't done a whole lot, at work when there's food that would go to waste 'outdated' I offer to take it to our local red cross chapter to see if they can use it, and I've donated a paycheck once to cancer research, but that's really all I've done...

Also, I texted the Haiti relief thing to donate 10 dollars on like 6 of my friends phones, they found out and weren't to upset, if that counts. :p

I just want my life to matter and have a job where Im actually doing more than just making my boss rich just in order pay my bills, and thats one of the reasons why I became a certified EMT and am trying to become a firefighter.

I sort of want a job that fulfills me..

Hence the art / music bachelors.
I want to sell my music, sell my art and live in a way that suits me, not living 9-5 weekdays.

I can't blame you, that's how I wanted to live my life. I guess its different if you didn't hear him, we talked for over an hour, but it really altered my perception. I felt like my life was so self-centered compared to actually doing something for someone worse off than me. And when you come to that realization...its saddening

To me, this is something right up there. Firefighters are brave and make huge sacrifices for other people. Good job

I don't want to be remembered for doing something heroic or just, since I'm a wimp really.. I'm a 17 year old girl whose afraid of the dark still.

I want to be remembered though for having an impact on how people FEEL.

I've never been good at most subjects or sport etc.
But Art and Music I'm good at, so I want to leave something for people to think about..
Not as brave or couragous as a fireman or a police officer, but still. .

I hear very interesting stories from several Marines I know.
I know the Seal's are more intense but some of the training seems ridiculous. And the situations soldiers in Iraq have gone thru is amazing as well. i.e. children suicide bombers.

I know how you feel about not feeling too accomplished.

But if there's one thing I do know, is that you help out so much by showing support for your troops.

The road to change is long and arduous. It is not something that happens over night, rather it is a bunch of baby steps, and a lot of set backs. However I think thats probably the way it's got to be. Only the truly dedicated will change.

Whatever you feel your calling in life is, as long as its not something terribly bad, go after it. If you don't see yourself as the person you want to be, figure out what is missing, and fix it. All change starts from within, and the only reason you should change is for yourself, not other people.

Find strength in your friends, and hope that when the going gets tough they won't abandon you. After all, anyone can be your friend in times of peace, but it is during adversity that people's true selves come out.
*waits for people to call me a hypocrite*

i've always wondered how it feels like to join the US Navy. I have a brother in the states and i thought he would be my ticket to go to the states but unfortunately, didn't happen. only if i would have been given an opportunity to go to the states and live my life there then maybe i could have made a difference...i am now working on a technical helpdesk..maybe the community service i have done is fed a whole orphanage for a day...cooked for them and that's it..i'm 27 and i haven't done anything for my community..what a shame..

What...? It has nothing to do with the Navy...first off, I said he is EX navy, i.e. he quit. Secondly, you'd have to be an idiot to try and "recruit" on an aion private server, where half the players couldn't swim at all, let alone do the shit they had to do...but w.e.

I made the thread as a kind of self reflection with just some external opinions. Sorry you think that I'm not being sincere about it, but meh. I honestly don't think judgments like that can be made through my forum etiquette ;(. I just wanted to see what other people felt about how their life has been of service...it wasn't made to be construed any other way. I know that asking it on a private aion server isn't going to get the best responses...but still I wanted to see variety :<
