well of course the i7 will smoke the phenom quad in most cases if you are expecting maximum performance. ;]

i have two gaming PCs, 1 runs on 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo with 1.5gig ram and 512Mb GeForce GPU and the other runs on 2.8 GHz Athlon ii X2 with 2Gig ram and 1Gig ATI GPU... my only problem is my AMD PC heats up more faster than my Intel PC... but my AMD PC performs better coz it has better specs... but my intel PC cost a little higher than my AMD including the other parts inside

Intel is obviously in the lead as far as the best CPU goes atm with their i7 line, however I've been using AMD for a while and I rather like them, especially that their CPUs tend to be cheaper with great performace still, upgraded to a Phenom II X4 965 BE (@3.4ghz) two weeks ago or so for about 150 bucks, pretty happy with it.

Though if I had the money I'd definitely buy a mobo that supports the i7 and get one, dat 4 core hyperthreading as 8.

intel focuses on performance, amd more on value and energy savings. that's all it comes down to when choosing which way to go, imo.

on idle, my phenom II idles at a much lower W compared to an i7 with a similar price point. probably because of cool and quiet technology im guessing
