windows 7 >.>

guys help my aunt out she's got windows 7. she right clicked one useless shortuc and pressed open with windows media player >.> that file denied to be opened and now the rest of all files in the pc are being opened with media player, she cant even restore her system cuz even that crap is opining in the media player lol... i tried yahoo answers but nothing useful yet so guys do u have a clue how she can get her settings back?

 

err do u have screenshots or anything that could help? the thing is, i know u can change a file type to open with a specific program, i dont think u can change EVERYTHING AT ONCE to open with that program more info would help, ill take a look in the meantime

do u have any idea as to what it is she did? (like what shortcut was it). also, try open anything thats not a shortcut (like go directly to the exe) and see what happens

 

nope i cant give ss of that >.> i am kinda confused too cuz i have never heard of such stuff in my life and she did it to the movie maker shortcut lol, someone sent her a shortcut in the skype, she right clicked-open with media player and duum everything has now got windows media icon and everything is being opened with that crap lol

 

even if things r opened with media player, try this

right click anything (like an original text file), choose open with and pick notepad/word and see if file associations change or if it opens in the program u chose (thats a start)

EDIT: kinda curious why some1 would send a shortcut over skype, does she know the person? also check in file properties where the shortcut goes (if it was even a legit shortcut or if it was a masked malware)

 

mm it has changed lol : o i told her to make notepad file, then save as it is, then open with> notepad and everything has got the notepad icon and even my computer is being opened into note pad lol

 

ok, did she try restart her pc yet? i would try a hard shut down (just hold the power button) and start it up again, see if things fix (a lot of the times they do)

would be so much easier if i could be there and see whats happening

try open command prompt (type cmd into the start search box), type rstrui.exe there and enter, it should open system restore (if ur lucky)

use this guide to restore the .exe file extension first, then see if programs work like they should, if it only fixes exe files, at least ull be able to run system restore

@justnick001 geez guys cut it out lol, format is the last resort, i mean if ur gona lose everything, might as well try other things first? a lot of things can be fixed without having to format, saves a lot of trouble
