I find it interesting how Edi's thoughts are completely different from my own. I find a genius more well rounded, instead of someone smart who can only master so many subjects at a time.

God, I seriously love the threads you make.

Hate how pretty much everything that I would say has already been said. They're thanked, if anything.

This is a little bit offtopic Nujabes, but if I give you a super awesome positive rep comment, will it end up on your sig?

OT: I'll keep it simple, my idea of a genius is someone who has made significant contributions to society (in terms of advancement, technological, philosophical, artistic, etc. etc.). A smart person is just someone with the patience, or willingness, along with understanding to throw himself against a book and understand concepts which have already been laid out.

As many others are saying a genius can and for the most part be well rounded. These types are called "Renaissance Men". People like Leonardo Da Vinci for instance who were masters of multiple areas and were considered geniuses of their time. We have similar people like that today. Today's geniuses are normally in societies such as Mensa were it's basically just a little social club.

Geniuses can come in many shapes and sizes. A lot of autistic children for instances are shown to be genuises in specific areas. Like the Human Calculator for instance, or autistic children who show musical genius. These children are labeled as outcasts by society because of their mental defect, but are still considered geniuses by others because of their abilities.

People have called me a genius my entire life. I tended to excel at a lot of school subjects, but I hated being branded as such because I never felt I was that smart. I just wanted to be a normal guy, but sadly that didn't happen.

I think this is kindof where I disagree with a lot of people. I don't see ordinary people that excel in certain things as a genius. I'd probably say DaVinci was a genius, but not just people who are very intelligent at something. To me, being a genius goes beyond the barrier of just knowledge, theres a lot of extra things that go with it, an entire mental aptitude. I do agree that several autistic children can grow up to be geniuses though.

Well certain people are always going to be labeled as geniuses if they master something even if it is one thing. Beethoven is considered a genius of music, Steven Hawking is considered a genius of science, etc. and so forth. Not saying they may have been geniuses in other areas, but that is where they are most known and labeled as geniuses.

I know, and im not saying they need to master anything and everything to be a genius, just that to me some people use the word too loosely, though I see it as a mindset and more than just the knowledge of something.

You are right. People have a tendency to throw the word around a lot nowadays.

Actually, that depends quite a bit. A genius may have shot at getting crazy odd, unique careers, or they may get paid a lot for what they may come up with and stuff, but it doesn't always apply to everyone, nor does it mean they enjoy it more.

A well rounded, ordinary intelligent fellow with good education can generally get a great career in a path that they absolutely want to live their life as. They can live a happy, ordinary life and make as much money as they need to have a big house, easily support their family, live nicely, maybe not of millionaire-status but still as much money as they'd need to live a happy, grand life, considering of course they make good decisions. This may be exactly the career life they want.

A genius, however, usually lacks social skills and is brought down in a lot of aspects by such. Have you ever heard that someone with a C grade average and a good social background (ie: participation in clubs, sports, etc.) is more likely to get into a good university than someone with straight A's that does nothing but study? Its mostly true, not that it applies to a genius as I'm sure colleges stumble over each other to get one in their hands, but it still has situational appliances of the meaning. By not having good social skills, the genius has already lost a great percentage of job opportunities that require said social skills. Then you have to consider if they're actually well rounded in their smarts or not. If they aren't, then they may have horrendous aptitude in one field, but not a lot of other ones. What if they decide they don't like what they do, but really they're stuck with it, because they may be so smart in one thing but they've lost sight of everything else? I'm not the greatest when it comes to history, but if I'm not mistaken, most geniuses in the past have had serious cases of depression, and if you put yourself in their shoes it should be easy to see why.

    too long to read...

yes, a smart person would be more happier than a genius, because of his ability to interact and cope with a normal person (i assume these are the traits a genius would lack)
And it is possible to be considered a genius in this day and age... but we just cant find a lot of people to be considered one though... although there are many nerds on the way to becoming one but fail in the end...

Either way, There's no such thing as 'Geniuses,' because we already have 'History' and 'Legends.' :)

Have you guys noticed, everyone who has posted here (except for Ecchii and maybe some other people) has used 'Smart' language ? O.O" Also would this thread be categorised into 'Philosophy' or .. o.o"
Cause i find that we need a 'Philosophy' section to group all these threads. :|

This discussion is lacking a crucial element. Wisdom. Intelligence and genius is fine and well for understanding, and I believe both are the same in essence. Intelligence is the potential to learn, genius is the natural ability to understand specific things beyond the normal ability of humans. Wisdom is the actual application of knowledge, and is more important.

You can be smart, but if you don't use that knowledge, what good does it do you or anyone? Someone without the book smarts to get a college degree can still be more useful to the world than eggheads that have a doctorate and sit around studying the effects of coffee on grasshoppers.

I don't believe in labels such as "genius" & "smart".
I believe in being aware of self & environment.

Taking time when making decisions & a curious mind & a good heart is the key to survival and happiness.

Why do you argue with a blunt hammer and not give your own GPA salary or exam scores x.x. i never claimed i was a genius, to me, excelling at school proves nothing. In fact, im sure that finding smart ways to cheat fosters ingenuity more than just studying, but I'm not one for much studying.

Either way, you're the idiot for arguing with a logical fallacy ;o. Can't call me stupid without saying anything of substance in a post now ;D
