While watching the new, they came across with this news segment. Which struck me, in some way, as a good idea but also a bad idea.

Some employers are going to be asking for your Facebook Password and Facebook Login as a part of the background check. They want to see your posts, your messages and such. Anyhow watch it.

    http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/mor...mployers-want-your-facebook-password-02232011

I think the good idea is good for most jobs such as law enforcement jobs, government positions or any healthcare position because they already are doing a background test on you, and they will find out such information regardless but with this facebook information, would help them to know as well if your the same person, or if you've changed. However, this type of in depth background check should not be applied to short terms jobs.

There are so many reports of cops beating down innocent people because they are a cop, or doctors getting away with murder because they fail to fully investigate ones problem so they take the easy way out and prescribe wrong medication to adults/children. Such as one psychologist who prescribe a 7yr old medication which later made her sick that she ended up choking and dying on her own vomit just so the parents could collect social security income.

I think this would in depth background check for government positions, law enforcement or healthcare positions would help eliminate this so innocent adults and children don't suffer the consequences due to laziness or greed.

    Tell me what you think...

    1. Are you watching news on FOX?
    2. If yes to 1, I'd say don't trust it too much. FOX is notorious for making up stories.
    3. If no to 1, I'd say it's not that good of an idea. Me swearing like Samuel L. Jackson or Duke Nukem on Facebook doesn't mean I can't be a straight-A student in class. The same goes to employees and stuff, and that's why stories about employees getting fired over a slip of the tongue with their Facebook status infuriate me. We are who we are through our actions in real life, not something we probably typed whilst chugging on a bottle of Vodka.

And that's why social networks are created: to connect people who live far away from each other, such as me and my dad and friends in Vietnam.

Well indeed, could be a good idea for the positions u mentioned like in government , law , etc . But in the other cases i do believe its just violating the little privacy people still have :)

Technically when they do a background check its a form of violation to a certain extent . Plus if this starts to happen, we can change our passwords. So its not likes is a everyday thing for them to check and if you know there gonna do a check, go and delete those messages.

If you work for a goverment agency with a high level of resposability duties. I can assure you that the level of indeep information they can get about you, far and exceeds what they could find in facebook. Maybe that kind of indeep research should be applied to other jobs as you say to stop abuses and innocent people being hurt.

On the other side, those jobs also have a very high pay rate. So maybe you just dont care to give up personal info for the money you get in exchange. And thus, maybe that people wont care about giving up facebook info... but for the general population? Big no, ultimately we all have the right to have private information that is out of reach of everbody else.

Most colleges google people now. You're life online IS a recruiting method. From someone who's always taken an interest to business, Ima be the one going against the grain. It makes perfect sense to do this, although I think more subtle methods are available. You don't want to hire a ex con for sure, but you don't want to hire a dead end worker who's personal conduct is horrendous. Most interviewers watch for body language, facial expressions, emotions, etc. Simple tasks such as taking someone to dinner and seeing if they salt their food before tasting it, everything is taken into account by smart businessmen. This is just one way to gather more info and make their decision easier. If you ever thought there was privacy on the internet, you might as well stop arguing right now. You have NO clue to what extent the government knows information about you. You honestly have almost no privacy in this new day and age. Businessmen are just being smart

Privacy Violation, the employer has no business going through your things. Personally I've no facebook or anything, I think social networking is somewhat silly... but to each his own

I CANNOT, for the life of me, find this statement unaggressive toward social network users.
It's like saying all black people are bad because 1% of them are crackheads or all asians are kinky because some Japanese are.

    Stereotyping at its best.

Uhh no. They do it not to see who you're dating, but to see how you act when you feel like you're boss ISN'T looking. THATS YOUR REAL CHARACTER D:, and they want to see that. Also, seeing if you're an alcoholic, you do drugs, if you're an angry individual, how you interact with others, how good you are with team building, if you're a leader or a follower, etc. You'll be surprised how much information that is extremely useful to a business can be obtained from that. I mean, if you ever go to dinner with a higher up, you have no idea how much research they are doing just be watching you eat lmfao ;P

If he salts his food before tasting - he's not open to new ideas. He isn't willing to test stuff out. Preset ideals.

Certain famous businessmen like J. P. Morgan wouldn't hire you if you salted your food before tasting it. You failed the interview right there and then.

I feel like checking out social networking sites isn't the BEST way to find out what the person is really like. The internets changes behavior (at least mine) quite a bit. I don't think I'll ever have to worry about this though since a higher up can't find out much of anything apart from my academic achievements, which I don't mind them knowing.
