So, I live in a nice and extremely affluent town (some famous people live here too), but its nearby to downtown Chicago. I grew up near South Side, not exactly in it, but close enough to know what kind of life they lived down there. Here's a short clip that highlights some of the huge issues

My question is, what do you people think is the root of this issue, and how do you tackle it as a large issue and not just donating supplies. I've personally tried to start my own programs to only have them end up as crushing failures, and I just don't know how to fix this huge problem. I know corruption is part of the issue, you can bribe a cop in Chicago to look the other way for almost anything. But there must be some reason, like the video shows, Chicago is not the BIGGEST city, yet it still has the most violence for children. In fact, its death toll is higher or almost as high as some places overseas in warzones. So clearly there must be some underlying issue

what do you guys think?

Lots of Kids these Days wants to be/act cool..Some Try to be someone they are not.. acting tough, trying hard to be the center of attention ,Bullying kids,or dressing up with some over sized clothing. For me I think there's a reason for everything..
for example: Problems , Family , Life ,etc.. I think these Children needs Parental Attention. Nothing Beats a parents love..
They join Groups/Gangs because they lack attention, noone to rely on so they run to their friends.
So I think Parents should always spend more time with their kids instead of work or whatever.. A simple "I love you" or "Im proud of you" message to your kids might change their lives.
Family goes 1st work can come 2nd :)

i blame the parents... my parents both with university diplomas have enforced strict rules on me and on my younger brother ( but he still gets away with stuff, they baby him too much >.<! ) ever since we were young, theyve taught us the right things to do in life, to grow up and become someone of importance. Eventually we will have our own families, and kids which we will most likely enforce the same rules my parents have insisted on me and my brother while growing up. It will obviously continue as a chain reaction, but this will obviously occur for the other side of the story, parents who just dont give a shit about their child, setting up a bad example for them, will lead to their child doing the same with his kids. I know many parents which give their children too much leisure and next thing you know the child is no longer listening to the parents and eventually it comes to a point where the arguing with his parents will make him leave the house and end up on the streets, uneducated and without a job. And what happens to people like them? they end up becoming criminals and ending up in jail.

Ahh yes... This can cause Depression...
And we know Depression is a very bad thing... So the only hope for the Child is To Be strong.
But if Influenced by something bad or Violence in such a young age... That's a different story..

My parents are always working, i barely even see them, whenever they do come home, im usually upstairs studying. Only time i do see them is when they come in my room to check up on me. But parents aren't 100 percent at fault here as its the child's actions that will determine his future, if they were to listen to their parents they would obviously grow up to become respected individuals. The parents are there to encourage and guide you towards a bright future, its YOU who decides on whether or not its worth listening to them. There are rich and respected families out there which find their children grow up and become bums without any education and future.

Parental factors certainly play a big part in forming the youths of the future, that's a fact. Abusive parents can affect kids negatively.

But I blame not on the parents in this particular matter, or at least not as much, but instead our culture nowadays.

Media delivering sizzling trends, but not what we experienced when we were kids: fun and educational shows.

Crimes on the rise can also affect the children.

...Also, music. God, what the hell is wrong with music these days? I admit I do listen to them, accidentally or not, but cranking on 105.9 in LA is just...disastrous.

Probably because you are mentally strong.

A lot of the druggies I know were pretty much considered "nerds" by past standards, now they go to class baked almost everyday.

But...gosh, do they look happy, not to mention they're nice and chill to talk to also.

I actually blame drugs for part of it. Those kids are exposed to it during an early stage, and it causes lots of issues. It was also the reason my programs failed in the end. Its not all parents faults. I blame partially the very poor funding schools get as well as the ridiculously low education standards. Culture is a part of it also, with media and music playing a role. I don't think putting the blame on the parents is fair because lots of times, this happens across all types of families. Yes dysfunctional families tend to be more susceptible to have their kids join gangs, but it's certainly not the only factor.

like they say: "Curiosity killed the cat"

Kids..Even Adults are just too Curious.
like when someone says "dude try this stuff out! you'll feel like your in heaven!"
<--just an example lol
Sometimes We Humans get too curious..So We try it out without hesitation..not even knowing what effect/harm it might bring.

It's been going on for a while now, and has actually gotten worse. I honestly think there is something freaking wrong with our country when 13 year olds can easily obtain guns

I know younger kids can get it, but by the age of 13, so many children in Chicago already have weapons, its depressing

Kids require a frame set of values and education to filter reality to make choices that wont end in violence, drugs, prostitution, etc.

Education plays a powerfull role in this, if parents cant give those in the right way, its quite posible that the kids will fall into violent stuff.

Not an easy topic, specially when is becoming more and more frequent that those parents are also kids, in the same circle.

Well, not much you can do about it, just to keep it in mind when you have your own kids.
