So today, my school celebrated the "Silence the Violence" day, where students who participated are excused from responding to others [including teachers] when asked something. The idea behind it is: Participants act as, and represent those who were abused/bullied/oppressed because they couldn't speak for themselves.

IMO, it doesn't make an ounce of sense to me. The oppressed/bullied were oppressed/bullied because they stayed quiet, then shouldn't we start speaking out if we want to stop the violence? Keeping quiet won't help do anything, and bullies may take this as an opportunity to take control of you even more.

In addition, kids [as I saw them] who literally ignored teachers because they had a puny paper slip attached to them further ridiculed this occasion's meaning to me.

And yeah, the silence thing never made sense to me. I guess it shows their resolve, but personally, I think it should be more activism, not silent protest.

    Exactly.

Kids should be encouraged to face the bullies with the help and the support of the Teachers/ Professors. At school kids should be taught that silence doesn't solve anything, it won't offer them peace, nor it will take away the pain and the marks from their souls/ body.

I think it's the OTHER people who need to stand up. "The Bystander." It's sad how culture actually helps create this issue, but I have the privilege of attending a school that prides itself on the character of its students. I personally thing rather than criticizing and telling them how they should be doing it, you should stand up yourselff ;o

Your school fails. My high school made it mandatory that everyone learn a martial art so that we can face the bullies and beat the crap out of them. Unfortunately this also meant that the bullies also were trained. That plan did not end well.

I don't think most bullying is mostly physical nowadays. Idk since our school has resolved the problem, or a large part of it, but the solution is motivating EVERYONE to realizing what is ethically and morally right.

It doesn't involve fighting [at least not that much] anymore. Instead, it has switched to emotional bullying through the use of racial slurs and the like.

Hey, I just moved here 2 years ago, so calling me a FOB outta the blue is pretty much ok, right? Bullshit.

On a serious note TBH my school never really had problems with bullying except for the occassional jackass, but it wouldn't take long for someone to beat him down. Actually some of the worst bullies were the smaller people who would try to mess with the bigger people, because if the bigger people did something it would look like they're the bullies. My town and school are really messed up.

This is actually what I thought this thread was referring to. We have this day at our school also. I still think making videos like that and playing them during class and having workshops and whatnot helps more.

Actually I remember one thing my school did. Someone made posters for the teachers to hang up on their doors, and they said No Bullying Zone, but they also failed in that those words were circled and and had the line through them to cross them out.
