According to an article I saw, and was rather interested in. In which I definitely would have to agree with. It states that swearing can help people cope with pain. I know when I say a curse when i hurt myself, i tend forget about the pain and move..

    Article:

    Thoughts? Agree?? Disagree??

And what word do you use a lot when pain emerges? I say the f-bomb.

No, it does not physiologically or neurologically reduce pain. Not at all. All it does is express rage and release a bit of steam. Any other phrase from gee willikers to god damnit would do the same. I personally do, if say I stub my toe or something, instinctively say damnit, and maybe that's from watching too much 24, but its all instinctual.

I find working out, wailing on a punching bag, playing football, or listening to music tons more effective at releasing stress and emotions than swearing though.

I swear when only I'm mad most of the time, if I swear when I'm talking casually, it's probably something I was mad about before or something that is ridiculous. As for releasing steam, it helps, don't know if it reduces pain exactly, I haven't gotten hurt bad enough to test this theory ;o

Being someone who's been through, oh 2 births, I have to say, I not once cursed during it. Considering with my last child the pain I had was in my ass and felt like someone was stabbing me with a knife. If i remember, the phrase i said was " good god it hurts" and rubbed the spot.

no. i dont think i would disagree. coz when you swear means that you have a responsibility for what would happen and what was said. technically you would end up hurting the person and cause more pain if you could not do what you have swore or break a promise.

my mind is quite messed up..:(

I think you misunderstood the article...

Like example: when you stub you toe, or in pain, some people swear to relieve pain is what it is saying.

Yeah, i believe that. It's a way of personal expression to let go the unwanted feelings.

I think saying a curse word, helps reduce your concentration on the pain. I know when im in pain, i do things to keep my mind off it. So in a sense it does relieve pain mentally, but not physically.

im not much of a person who is fonded of swearing
whenever im in physical pain i usually just hold it and maybe moan a bit if its something thats longer lasting i try not to think about it
since the more i focus on the pain the more it feels like it hurts

I once was walking around with a 3-inch nail inside the heel of my left foot. I didn't know it was there for a full 2 hours until a friend of mine noticed blood on the floor I stepped on. When I saw my foot bleeding and derailed I fell unconscious.

Not a fan of swearing either, but I agree with the article. It helps with pain tolerance a lot.

Okay, imagine this: Place the sharp end of a nail into the meaty part underneath your toenail, then kick that nail against a wall.

Back on-topic: I do not agree completely to the statement, but I do believe that through swearing, you're somehow relieving your mind of the pain by focusing on the use of verbal language.

Of course, if you shout out something comical, that's even better.
