Did I help too much, peoples o.o? I hope this wasn't overwhelming/misinformative Dx

"Magic resist is always a good one.

    Also shield-block.

I'd say slot magic resist into your armor pieces themselves (If you can, obtain ABG chain as it gives M.R. bonuses... defence is superficial in Aion in my opinion at least.) and then slot block/crit into your mace/shield.

Then have a greatsword for all out damage and maybe slot some critical strike into there, although food + scrolls should easily subsidize critical strike potential.

This way you have M.R. that can defend against magic abilities (aside from sorcerers with <Supplication of Focus> which raises their M.A. by an entire 1,000 points! (100% more chance to hit o.o;)!)...

And then you also have a shield which you can run around with and block against physical characters.

You, as a templar, would also have buffs to subsidize these innate defences as well (innate meaning well... naturally ocurring or not really thought-of... passive pretty much), making you definately able to take a few blows.

In terms of the shield/mace I'd go for an extendable mace and an ABG shield.

For the greatsword I'd go for ABG greatsword fused with veilles/mastarius for the best results.

Accessories... all ABG I'd suggest. HOWEVER! For the hat I would suggest you go for noble carved malevite glasses (or something like that...) they add +171 Magic resistance or so.

since shield block comes in +27 block per manastone and M.R. comes in +14 magic resistance per sone it would be wiser to use the hat accessory to boost M.R. which would require the dedication of more stones to achieve the bonus effect lost by using another hat.

So if you look at it this way... breaking it down.

6 slots per piece of gear x 5 armor pieces (for M.R. only) = 30 slots for M.R. 30x14 = 420 from just that. That is not including the noble malevite glasses, accessories bonuses or armor bonuses. It is a fair amount.

For shield/mace: If you go extendable expect around 4 slots, but the extendability REALLY helps in PvP in my humble opinion :x! Shield gives 6 so 10 slots: 10x 27 = 270 block added. Remember that your shield at +15 gives block bonuses and templars get a passive to raise their block stat as well. Templars also have skills which can increase their chance to block or give a guaranteed oppertunity to block as well.

For greatsword... 11 slots in all 6 from ABG 5 from Masta/Veille so 11 x 17 (17 crit per stone) = 187 critical bonus from this... without including exterior things like pots, scrolls, weapon bonuses, passives, etc. You could even choose to slot magic resistance into this, or perhaps parry. Parry gives a +27 parry chance bonus per stone as well... so 27 x 11 = 297 addition to parry. However, remember that you have a sparse few abilities that can help you parry, opposed to shield block which is your main forte. You may need to sacrifice a little bit of M.R. for more parry (27-14 = 13. 13 Surplus so 1.3% chance of parrying increased in return for giving 1.4% of block away... so parry chance raised by 2.7% per 1.4% magic resist thrown away...).

Considering how sorcerers/clerics/spiritmasters and general classes will have Magic accurayc far below your innate M.R., sparing some should be fine. As those who boosted their magic accuracy would hit through you either way, making the large-value of magic resistance stacked 100% pointless and probably maladaptive as melee characters would possibly attack you at the same time.

    Hope this helps!
