Folks having weird problems, either be a crash or graphic errors, here are some possible solutions (do all the step just for precaution):

-Update your client through the OFFICIAL updater (duh) and make sure the game does NOT start atuomatically.
-Open the official server and test the game with any char
-Close the official server, open the official updater and click on the File Repair button on the lower left corner.
-Let it do it's thing (it might take 1~2 hours)
    -Test the official game again
-Do a fresh install of the Gamez installer
    -Update when it's asked
-After finishing updating and it is ready to start the game, close the updater (bare with)
-Open your Aion installation folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\NCSOFT)
-Change all the permissions on the "Aion" folder so that any user anywhere have full control over it. (Properties>Security>Edit>Full Control in each and every user)
-Create a shortcut of the GamezAion.exe where is set to "Run as Administrator" for all users. (Shortcut>Properties>Compatibility>Change settings for all users>Tick the "Run this program as an administrator" box)
    -Always run from this shortcut

There might be some overkills, but my game is working prim and proper.
This should solve most of the Windows 7/8 problems and perhaps the WinXP problems too.

    I hope it helps! :)

    PS:
Make sure you have updated Graphics Drivers, the latest Direct X and UAC disabled (who uses that anyway?!)
    Good luck!

This happend to me. All I had to do was to close the updater and reopen it. It finished where it left off. At 59% you are finished with the download. Sometimes, when it starts to update the files it gets stuck.
