    It's a pretty large community.

    I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but there are enough players to keep you busy no matter which race you choose.

    To get more accurate numbers, press V ingame and hit search. It will list up to 104 online players. Generally there are fewer so it helps you get the exact count (whoever isn't set to invisible anyway).
