Enabling gamepads break the game performance

Same as the title. I decided to try out an Xbox controller with the game and it immediately tanks my performance. Even if I switch it back to Keyboard, the performance doesn't go back to normal until I restart the game. Rebooting the game while gamepad is still toggled on in the settings doesn't fix the game either.

Has anyone run into this and, if so, how can I fix it?

Should note that it works fine on Remastered graphics but not on regular settings, which I change as needed.

 

Unfortunately, this isn't a "ported"-version from "game-box" to PC, but actually a PC-version...now it might be true that some players are using a "game-box"-controller, but if so I am not aware which type or what software they are using to make it work.
