pain neurons are generally the slowest neurons in the body o_o considering how they have the smallest buildup of myelin sheath on them (fatty tissue that insulates the neuron)... afterall speed of transmission increases with lowered internal resistance (like a wire, want to use copper or something like that) and increased insulation (or outside resistance) which pushes the signal forward.

Then again there are no pain receptors located within the rich neural tissue of the brain, so this does not shock me. However, for him to not have realised he got shot is quite alarming... because normally when people suffer a brain injury (stroke, hemmorage, lesion, or something) there are usually large changes in cognitive function and/or emotion... then again there is always the classical example of Phennas Gague who took a giant metal pole through his prefrontal lobe and he survived (and WOAH was it big!) and recieved only minute cognitive and emotional differences...

He went from being a man of integrity and loyalty and hard working to one of lazyness, apathy and a risk taker (big gambler) swiftly after taking the damage to his brain.

This point shows that the prefrontal cortex has a large factor in the regulation and control of emotion and cognitive tasks. This is also seen within decortified cats (cats with the cortex removed) in which they have something called "sham rage" where they will basically spaz unprovoked. This leads to the conclusion that the prefrontal cortex is in regulation of emotion and the damage to that area is importaint.

    /random speel....

tl;dr: Wow no one noticed? Must be from southern america.
