An African descendent trying to make a change in North America using music as a form of art, K’naan is truly one of the kind. Unlike other rappers, his lyrics are embedded with profound meanings, personal experience and lifelong hardships.

/disuss about our modern day artist, how we identify them? Who do you think they are?
Wavin' Flag, sung at the World Cup(sry for my ignorance)

    Wavin' Flag lyrics
    Songwriters: Lawrence, Phillip; Mars, Bruno; Warsame, Keinan;

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom, just like a wavin' flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
A violent prone, poor people zone
But it's my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam

Out of the darkness, I came the farthest
    Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
    Accept no defeat, surrender, retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that fateful day
It's not far away, but for now we say

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

    So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say 'love is the way'
'Love is the answer,' that's what they say

But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn't hold us

'Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we'll be free
So we patiently wait for that faithful day
It's not far away but for now we say

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then is goes

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then it goes
    And then it goes

And everybody will be singing it
And you and I will be singing it
And we all will be singing it

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, and then it goes

When I get older I will be stronger
They'll call me freedom just like a wavin' flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back, oh

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger just like a wavin' flag
Just like a wavin' flag, just like a wavin' flag
Flag, flag, just like a wavin' flag

eh i have to argee, if you are an north american, there was a battle between K-west and 50 cent. Both of them seriously in my own perspective just merely made shty music and cause more teen violence, drug abuse and sex...

O.O lick me like a lolipop...

Having heard that song once, I was completely amazed at how our "music" standards have degenerated.

listen to all kinds of other music. Pop music usually has worthless lyrics. But I'm surprised at the numerous amount of other bands who really have profound meanings in their songs. I listened to Rise Against and was blown away by how deep their lyrics are. Linkin park has some profound stuff, watch the "what I've done" music video.

I know theres so many more that I listen to, but I'm having a brain block right now ;D

Most songs I listen to have meanings, lol. Like, Lil Wayne, was a joke... rofl

Listen to Spill Canvas, I really like their songs for the lyrics and the way they bring it forward. What abc said is pretty damn right too.

In your perspective, what do you think of Bob Marley. (No woman no cry, three little birds and etc)

Well, I've lived in the Carribean for over 4 years now. And, ofcourse I get mixed up with different culture's music, including Bob Marley music. His songs are nice and inspirational. Most of them have a meaning to him, and he writes them with emotion. I'm really into songs like that.

I think of him as a damn nice songwriter. He puts soul and effort into his works, and I like them. Not my style of music, but I don't mind listening to them. They carry meaning, and that usually steals my musical heart.
