Let's talk about ping.

What is ping time? The amount of time (or lag) for a packet to travel between you and the server, measured in ms, or thousandths of a second.

Why is ping important? A low ping means less lag overall, at least from the server. If your pc sucks, you will lag anyways. ^^

What is a good ping in an mmorpg? Anything under 300ms is acceptable, or roughly a third of a second.

By now you are saying to yourself, I know this Autumn. What's your friggin' point? The thing is, I look at the forums, and you don't know this. You find out that you suck at pvp. You blame his low ping. Some dude is animation hacking. You blame his low ping.

If your ping is 200, and his ping is 50, he has a .15 second advantage over you, and this only actually applies for the first hit, if both of you hit the skill key at precisely the same time. Why does it only apply for the first hit? Because you are spamming skills at the same time as the other player. Time between skills doesn't decrease or increase because of ping at that low level of lag, because you are pretty much constantly sending packets to the server as fast as your cooldowns will let you.

Ping might, in rare cases, decide who hits first. Skill decides who hits last. (Or hack/exploit, as the case may be and often is.) So the next time you see someone justifying getting killed because of high ping, please call him the noob that he is. He might get mad, but he kinda deserves it.

You should add some programs like Leatrix / BattlePing / PingLow links so they can download them..^_^ more efficient anyway

And it's just a matter of milliseconds which isn't really a big deal in a pvp of a 200-400 ping vs 100 less ping. Not unless you have a 1000+ ping more than the others(which rarely happens) you'll really experience a lag(latency problem) on your side. So using it as excuse that someone can abuse the "ping issue" to get away of being persecuted as a hacker is wrong.

EDIT: For the confused people out there ping in short is the amount of time your packets sent gets through the server and recognized. The shorter the ping the faster it gets recognized by the server and the faster it is able to respond to the packets you sent.

What's the reason why others has a higher ping and others has a lower ping?
-The player live or stationed near to where the server was hosted.
Latency - is the delay or the number of hops your packet goes through before reaching it's destination. Now if you're too far from the host(server) your packets may still hop through different stations before arriving to the host or destinations. The lower the latency or the delay the faster the server responds.

-The player doesn't have bandwidth consuming apps that is running.(Though other players can request their ISP to modify their connection for gaming or adjust their latency towards the server.)
If you don't have a good connection to begin with then control yourself in downloading files while playing for these may interfere in the sending of packets to the server.

Correct me if I have made some errors.

Note:Unless your ping goes higher than 1000 or 900 there shouldn't be a problem with pvping with people with less than 100 ping. Since 1000+ already gives you 1-2 sec delay while 200-400ms is in a matter of milliseconds.

I think the point here is that, it doesn't matter if your ping is high or low as long as it will not exceed 1000ms. It wouldn't make that much of a difference if the ping is 300ms vs 40ms one. Let's keep in mind that ms means milliseconds. Do the math~
