Iniker's Movie of the Week: Hotaru no Haka.

Don't let the outer look of this movie - an anime (which can put some audiences off) - fool you.


It's not colorful.
It's not happy-go-lucky.
It's not your average anime.

Made in 1988, Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) has earned its place in many movie critics' hearts, including Roger Ebert (who gave it a 4-star rating).

The movie tells the story of two kids that became orphans after Kobe air raids carried out by the US during WW2. It's very depressing at certain parts, but also effectively narrates how Seta and Setsuko - representing many children whose parents were lost in wars - had to struggle through harsh postwar life.


If you've never watched it, prepare a tissue box for first-time viewing. If you've watched it, time to do so again.



Also, get the Japanese dub. The English dub is good, but not as effective as the Japanese one.​
