    Watched this movie several years ago. Definitely a good watch. Need to get ahold of the novel sometime.

    One of my friends reminded me about the movie recently so thought I'd post on it.

    Yeah.

    If you go by the movie, then it's done because society has started to crumble and the government uses "Battle Royale" as a means to control the so called "violent and rebellious" teenage population.

    The novel supposedly does it a bit differently.

    Guess it depends on what you find as effective when it comes to controlling the population. It's done more to instill paranoia as the teens have no idea when they will be chosen to compete.

    I love this movie, it's still my favorite japanese movie. The 2nd one put me to sleep though...

    Same. First one was really good, but the second one was a bit meh. Think they tried to feed off the success of the first movie by creating a sequel.
