    first dota is just a map that can be downloaded but u must have wacraft 3 fronzen throne installed +some patches to run the map. Dota 2 is a new game can be played only if you have steam as Floour said ! you can search the patches and dota maps for "dota 1" on google after you install warcaft 3 fronzen throne Official DotA Downloads this link for info and maps and this link so u can see the heroes, items and all you want to know about dota Official DotA Website
