    Neuro-minute!

Here is a daily event I will hold, hopefully, everyday. But if not then please forgive me for my sin D:

This event will be a bit more academically focused I guess ;p my goal? Make your brains think about brains! (Amazing, huh D:?) <No, its not that hard lol>

I will ask semi-challenging neurological questions (or neurosurgical) that WON’T require you to write a paragraph at all… I am not cruel O.O;.

    What I want to see?
-Short precise answers. (Nothing I ask even needs a paragraph @_@)
-Nothing from the infamous source of knowledge that is the internets = immediate disqualification.
-Some questions will come in two parts (such as this one today!), but generally… uhh… they are very similar in content.

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    Today’s question?!!?

    (Neuro-minute #2)

Emotion plays an integral role in the processing of information. Todays topic will be based upon emotion and its properties on the brain.

    (1) What are the three basic structures of the brain that are attributed to emotional capacity?

    (2) What is Urbach Wiethe Disease, in specifics, what emotional irregularity occurs with it?

    (3) Phineas Gage was unique to the study of emotion in what way? (Terrifying generalization on my part, but w/e :3)

Trick question: (a)What cranial nerve is norepinephrine tied with?
    (b) what impact does this have on memory?

(Each question answered = one victory point for you.)

Lol apparantly its a bit hard.

    Mmmkkk....

    How about we start easy?

Question: What are the primary 3 types of ion's used in an action potential?

    a) XD because of the size of squid axon, it allowed them to put voltage clamps electrodes... in my understanding this allowed them to see the way how electricity moved and reacted the muscles to generate some sort of action...

    b) I am guessing that one is the chance to actually measure something by the size of the axon... versus the one of other animals or humans... (cant figure the second one)

    c) I guessing when an action potetial is ocurring in the squid axon

    New question (EZ-mode):

In terms of cranial nerves... which one directly affects the heart?

    Voltage clamps like these O.O?

    Google Images

But yes... the size of the squid axon had a huge role in what they were able to do. It would be nearly impossible otherwise!

    Close close close close :3!

Hmmm wasn't quite what I was looking for :<

But the size of the axon is a critical part of what they were attempting to get rid of.

Naturally, like a hose with holes in it, the current will be pushed through... some of it will be lost. This forms a constant that is well... one of the answers, but it is integral for neurology XD

Then the second one is similar to length as well, since :X damn ima give it away I need to stfu lol XD!

sadly no =< not quite what i was looking for T.T

Its a bit of a tricky question, not something too easily googled.

    QUESTIONS UPDATED!

TODAYS NEURO-MINUTE UPDATED! NEW QUESTIONS POSTED!

    Answers to yesterdays questions!

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    Today’s question?!!?

Hodgkin and Huxley are often attributed to being the scientists that dispelled the mystery of the action potential. Their experiments were done far before neuron membrane channels were even known about (ion channels in the cellular membrane).

    (a) What was the one thing they did with a squid axon that was distinctly.. unique in their experiments. (It is blaringly weird and interesting at the same time!)

Answer: Cannulated the axon with a conductive metal.

    (b) What physical measures was this process attempting to bypass?
    (The two main ones).

Answer: (1) Lambda, length constant. (2) ri, internal resistance.

As an action potential travels down the axon, it is almost fitting to think of it as a hose with holes throughout it. Wherever you apply current, the current will eventually diffuse outwards and be lost… some will spray out of the hose and some of it will be pushed through the hose.

Extra/Trick question (Worth a prize in itself!/Separate from the others!): When toxin’s were available to test neuron ion channels, TTX would only have an effect on squid axon’s when….

Answer: Applied inside of the cell.

Application of TTX will not have any affect on the outside of the squid axon.

    TTX = Tetrodotoxin

    WINNERS: Adieu.

    1. there are 3 basic structure of the brain cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brain stem but i guess what you mean is the limbic system, often referred to as "emotional brain" and the parts of this system are thalamus, hypothalamus, hippocampus and amygdala.

*Not sure of my answer :)

That will get you prizes=p bringing up the limbic system.

Although I was looking at other structures.

So question is still up for grabs for specific structures in there. But your answer is brutally close :p = prizes
