I heard something about an execute system really ruining the pvp aspect. Would have to look it up.

    Edit:

I've been asked several times now since the BETA about my opinion on GW2 so I figured I'll just create a thread I can link.

First off I'd like to say that while I don't agree with the some of the more important choices they've made, I like the direction they are headed in. Guild Wars 2 deserves to be supported if for no other reason other than it's NOT copying WoW.

I'll start with it's strengths as there were a handful.

Anyone who tells you the questing is not like the typical mold does not know how to think for themselves. I'm sorry, but simply removing two dialog options does not equate to completely changing the leveling experience. So with your typical MMO you would run up, accept the quest, do the quest, then turn in the quest. In GW2 you run to the area, do the event and then receive a reward. That being said, it is an improvement to the questing process. But not to the level ArenaNet would like you to believe. You will still be killing boars and watering flowers. You will even have a "quest tracker" to let you know you're doing it. You just won't be clicking "Accept quest" to start it or running back to turn it in. It's a nice step forward as less buttons to click to achieve the same effect in regards to question is always welcomed.

The large amount of skills is pretty awesome and the way you acquire them equally so. So if I pick up a sword and equip it, I have a different set of 5 skills from say, a dagger. You get 1 default offensive skill you use for attacking. Once you've used it enough you will automatically learn skill 2 with the weapon, and so forth. It feels natural and makes sense. I don't know how deep it goes but it's very intuitive.

Being able to create a character, hop into a max level premade PvP is probably the most convenient thing an MMO has done in recent time. I don't particularly care about PvP in an RPG setting but due to everyone being on equal footing in regards to gear/characters it was pretty enjoyable.

Character creation gets a thumbs up for me. There isn't a ton of customization options in regards to how you look but there's a reason for it in regards to story telling.

Guild Wars 2 is sold as a deep PvP game. So with that, I played around with the leveling a bit but dove right into it's max level, premade PvP "battlegrounds". Played Elementalist first as they looked fairly deep and then Mesmer/Thief afterwards as they looked fairly simple. Which they were. Not going comment on the balance of the classes as it's really impossible to say over the course of one BETA weekend. Certain classes seemed stronger than others in the premade setting but for the most part I would say they are all capable.

My biggest peeve with the game is two parted and completely revolves around combat. To put it simply, the damage in this game makes no sense in correlation to what is going on around the player. After bombarding an individual with my Elementalists full 4x5 spell arsenal only to have the player sit at 60% was mind blowing. Fighters are probably my favorite genre competitively so I do not come from a background where instant results are the norm. Slow, steady, 3 hit combo chips are what I'm used to when it comes to player vs player combat. But this went above and beyond absurdity. If a player has 15,000HP (rough estimate), and I hit them for 4,000, they SHOULD be at roughly 3/4 HP, right? Wrong. Try 1/8th, or 1/10th. And a 4000 hit in GW2 is on the high end. In essence, for a game that is supposed to empower the player and make them feel apart of a battle, I felt like I was doing nothing but contributing to a massive spell barrage with the hopes of killing players. To vanilla WoW players, think Tarren Mill/Alterac Valley PvP but on smaller scale.

But the absolute worst thing about Guild Wars 2 is not even the fact you don't feel powerful. It's the fact that you have to execute your opponents after killing them. This did not work in a MUCH faster paced game Call of Duty, why the hell would it work in one as slow as GW2? It worked in Gears of War purely because the team sizes, map design and flow of combat meshed with it. When you have 15 people fighting on a small contest point and you manage to "knock down" one of them you can't exactly run up and execute them (3s~ cast). Instead you have to sit there wasting more time killing them a second time. It is bar none, the stupidest mechanic I have seen in a "competitive" game since... well quite frankly I can't recall the last time a mechanic was so out of place. It contributes nothing other than pure annoyance.

YOU CAN'T USE MODIFERS FOR HOTKEYS. CTRL, SHIFT, ALT will not work. You can only use single stroke commands to set your hotkeys. I've programmed enough to be simply dumbstruck as to why this was not allowed.

Graphically the game falls short except for the spell animations and effects. Graphics aren't a huge concern for me and have really no impact on my desire to play the game. But anyone who says it's a beautiful game is delusional. TERA is a beautiful game. Guild Wars 2 is a gritty low budget Fable. Extensive work needs to be done on the textures specifically. Even if they held some back for the sake of the BETA (pretty sure they didn't), they are barely better than World of Warcraft. Not joking.

To conclude, Guild Wars 2 turned out almost precisely as I thought would. Mechanically strong (minus the execution), but falling short on the combat pacing. I'm sure there's some other major things I've missed but the above covers the broad strokes for me. There needs to be some adjusting done on making the combat feel more contributive instead of this hit and run style it is now. Player skill does not take into account nearly as much as player positioning which as we have learned from MW3 is just a poor, poor place to stand in regards to combat.

If you have 60$ to spend drop it on Diablo 3. If you are looking for a new MMO, TERA will suit you much better. If it is a true PvP RPG game you want, well, Guild Wars 2 is going to be the best. But that's really not saying much comparatively.

well to put it simply, it does say beta, its not even a beta thats really out to be tested, they r still taking feedback and changing things, things like keyboard shortcuts will get changed no doubt

btw the client i got is like 13gb even though the full release size is supposed to be around 25gb. as for game requirements, they range from lame 2.0ghz dual cores with 256mb graphics memory to quad cores with 2gb graphics memory. yea thats quite a difference, larger than any single player game ive seen, im guessing the graphics u see arent exactly final either, judging both from file size as well as the reqs

bet this is more of a test of mechanics
