In addition to the above, tome has longer autoattack range which is helpful if you want to remove the buffs of your opponent, buffs such as evade/dodge. And jewel has about 1000 more mana (+ the fuse) so a total of 2k extra mp.

Btw, the ma/mb difference between tome and orb is insignificant, we are talking about like 30-50 more ma for the tome and the same amount of mb more for the jewel, nothing that would actually make a difference.

There is another primary difference you left out. Ever wondered why evade/dodge don't work? I noticed my blind gs acting weird and did a bit of testing on retail. Apparently orb hits are physical while tome hits are magical (so orb with blind on is guaranteed dodge, I should try tome with silence on).

Another thing you left out is the base attack, orb autoattack hits much harder than tome autoattack (but yes, you lose the range). In a lot of cases the short range is an advantage, such as not breaking your CC by accidental atoattack xd

It is generally a good idea to keep orb as MB socketed pve weapon and tome as MA socketed pvp weapon. On retail, full MB orb is my main and I use it until someone resists me. Only then do I switch to my backup MA tome.

Well that's another reason why people who want to remove buffs should avoid using the orb actually. Btw i havent tested those things, i dont play mages.. my reply was based on basic knowledge. Also, as you know gamezaion and retail are completely different in many aspects. So things might be different here.

Well, for removing buffs from Scouts of course Tome is best. Given that its magical base and long range it is easier to remove Resist skills from them while kiting without wasting important instant skills. You don't really need to use Orb to remove their dodge skills since Mage's skills are magical anyway.

I personally prefer Tome. I always use my Tome with MAcc/MB stones in it. But I have Orb that is full MB and with fuse.

I generally prefer having prebuffed cast speed so the best way to deal with rangers is the good old ice chain as the first hit does nothing and 2nd instant chain stuns them. I used to do this on gamez all the time, never got to try it on retail since fighting rangers there is like silence arrow -> stunfest -> die. It is not a fight, it is slaughter.

Edit: I really should try this on retail sometimes since it sounds a bit weird, first chain being resisted should not offer the 2nd chain skill to stun them

I prefer Jewel coz it looks cool on my char. It has additional MP which means more skills to cast. The tome and jewel has only 2 digit number difference of MA. Not really convincing

Orbs are better for me mainly because of the 2k extra mp...with tome i always seem to run out so fast.

Agreed, though still good to keep both because you can socket them differently. Of course orb will be more MB/offensive type, but you can socket MA as primary into tome to further increase the MA difference.

I use orb as both my ma/ mb and mb/ ma weapon and on my mr set i use a tome because of the extra ma it gives ...book is useful for kiting buffs ...but so are pets when your an sm or erosion and you dont have to be facing the target.
Also orb attacks dmg is based off attack but whether it lands or not is based of ma weird huh ;3

Yea sadly this is the extremely simplistic view most people discuss, totally disregarding all the other aspects.

To be honest there is 0 reason as an sm to go book ...unless your using it on a full mr set...you have 2.3k ma you can hit everything except the extreme mr people and even then you can just lower their mr...sorc on the otherhand gets destroyed by mr...they need like 2.3k base and even with a full ma set that can be difficult unless your going tome...orbs have extra crit spell too i believe and like a full enchanted orb has like almost 800 attack its crazy XD...hits like 750 dmg auto attacks lol.

I really think depends on your class... and what you are comfortable with... Yes tome can auto attack in range but for some takes to long better especially ping problems some just to use flame cage or low lvl erosion for sorc and erosions and like ethan said pet will do also the trick. To me I use both as well mb/ma with orb for main and then if I have to go against people who would have high mres I switch to tome with macc/mb. In gamez even blinded orb still hits... in retail nope even it says magic attack still it actually count as melee. That 2k mp from orb actually goes a long way you will be surprise. I feel recent changes as well has boosted orb in usefulness I remember having them in retail, good auto attacks and keep cc on lock, and still weaving sm skills- Maybe that's just me. Also synthetic wise I feel orbs look cooler aww the little dragons (rawr) LOL.
