Question about gear.

So Im new to Aion and I just leveled a few toons to 50-ish and I wanted to know where to get gear for them now and then what gear to advance on?

Hey!! Welcome to Gamez. I am online with my phone and it's kinda pain to write such a huge paragraph, but you should search some other threads with the same title. There had been like thousands of them. Grr! I'll have to make a guide thread for newbies I guess.

There are actually a lot of ways to obtain powerful pvp items whitout voting/donating:

You can purchase Divine Coliseum Champion (level 55 eternal, level 1 conditioning) with crucible insignas and courage insignas.

You can purchase Elite Archon/Guardian Tribunus items with gold medals and abyss points.

You can purchase Archon/guardian primus pilius items (level 55 fabled) / Archon Brigade General (level 55 eternal) items with abyss points and platinum medals.

You can purchase Archon/Guardian Sentinel (level 60 fabled), Elite Archon/Guardian Sentinel (level 60 fabled,with set bonus), Archon/Guardian Sentinel's divine (Level 60 fabled with level 1 augmenting) items with Mithril Medals and Abyss Points.

Your next question would be, "How do i get medals easly?".

You can obtain Courage/Crucible insignas by entering the Arena of Discipline/Arena of Chaos in marchutan's priory/kaisinel's academy
You can obtain gold medals by joing events/fortress sieges or by running instances in the abyss.
You can obtain platinum medals by leveling up characters to level 55 (you will get 10 medals each character) and by completing repeatable quests in gelkmaros/inggison.
You can obtain Mithril medals by exchanging platinum medals into mithrils, throught special coin fountains located in Sarpan/Tiamaranta/Oriel/Pernon,
by completing daily/weekly quests in Sarpan/tiamaranta or by joining fortress sieges in Tiamaranta.

Best end game gears like ACD, EAC, HAC cannot be bought from in-game NPCs. Only in the Credit Shop. But to make it possible for you to get those sets without spending too much time voting or without donating if you do not prefer such method then you can give these advices a try.
Join a legion or make friends that can help you run instances. It is good to run instances and keep the items you get if you cannot use them or you have extra. If you have 1,500 credits, avail VIP and start trading those valuable items that you farmed. Start crafting consumables too and do Daily/Weekly quests for Mithril medals and sell them for Kinah (broker them or make a package, shout in LFG so people can see) or any items. Kinah is very useful specially if there's something really nice and good item/s at the Broker. You can always buy there the parts you lack in a set. Broker is the easiest place to find and buy valuable items and Kinah is not that very hard to get. It's the simple Buy and Sell method.
Work hard to get good items for trade. And you'll be surprised how hard work and good trades can help you get the best end game gear in the server.

In addition to this, Tiamat Guard Sets and weapons (eternal and fabled) are also available now in-game which you can farm at Tiamat Stronghold. A really tough instance at Tiamaranta's Eye that only a good and organized group can manage to do the instance run successfully.
